798CI HD SI COMBO has DI problem
« on: March 21, 2015, 04:07:49 PM »
In getting ready to go to my big fishing trip of the year my 798CI HD SI COMBO started showing white vertical lines in the DI mode on full and shared screen views. Oh, and it is about one week out of warranty! Don't have time to switch it with the other unit and test it again on the water right now. I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue? Or is this just a $250 trip back to the factory? What timing, there is only 60 hours on this thing.

If these vertical lines in the DI view are also showing horizontally in the SI view ...this can sometimes be attributed to aerated water blocking the SI beams sound pulse ...either from scanning too fast with the big motor creating the aerated water ... Or something on the boat hull creating aerated water ...

Lines in any view can also be interference ... Either RFI or crosstalk from another unit on at the same time ...

If these vertical lines in the DI view are not showing in the SI view (Or 2d view) ... Then we have a gremlin that needs more attention ...

Can you post screenshots of the vertical line issue ...??

Please include SI screenshots taken at the same time the issue is noticeable in the DI view ... Maybe even a DI/SI split view when the line issue is evident ...

OK, short tutorial on on making screen shot?

*Insert "unlocked" SD Card into either card slot ...
*Press Menu twice to open the main tabbed menu system ...
*Cursor right to the Accessories tab ...
*Cursor down to Screenshot ...
*Cursor right to "Enable" ...
*Exit out of the menu system ...
*Press the "Mark" button to create a screenshot of whatever is currently showing on the display ...

A waypoint at the current GPS antenna location will also be created at the same time ...so you may (or may not) want to delete this waypoint from your waypoint library ...

Pics are from simulation but the same thing happens in the water, image is clear until I switch to a view for DI then the lines show up. Thought it might be the transducer but since it happens in the simulation?

That is a known gremlin in some software versions when the DI Enhance Sharpness setting is set to anything except "Off" ...

You can ... :

*Turn off Sharpness in the DI Enhance menu ...
*Turn the Chart Speed up past 3 (I hear this works) ...
*Update to latest software (I've read this was fixed in the latest version) ...

I will give those a try and the software upgrade when they release for my discontinued unit.
Thank you for the reply.

HookBender - just for clarification, which of the 3 remedies rnvinc gave you solved your problem?

I have the same model unit, although I have not had this problem it would be good to know just in case........

Many thanks!

Chart speed to 4 first and lines went away, went ahead and turned off sharpness in enhanced menu, did not go back and reduce chart speed to check if it was necessary to accomplish wiping out the lines. I probably should , but I was so tickled that it was fixed without returning to factory I did not think of it while I was fooling with it.
