black screen on my 999
« on: June 04, 2015, 10:35:33 AM »
Hello I have a 999hd si unit on my boat that I installed last year. I take very good care of the unit treat it like gold. Store it in my room never leave it in my boat after fishing trips. The other day when I was ending ,my fishing day the screen went white but I didn't think anything of it because I was taking boat out of water. Yesterday when I went out I pluged the unit in and my screen wouldn't turn on but the buttons light up so I know it is getting power. I never dropped it or has it ever been hit by anything so im very confused as to why the screen is staying black. If you look close you can see lines on the screen when I power it on so im sure it is nothing to do with power. Has anyone experienced anything like this. Couldn't come at a worse time. Nj tourney season is about to open back up. I need my hbird!

Many times issues such as these are attributed to low or insufficient power ...
(I read a LOT of forums and more than 50% of troubleshooting issues lead back to power related problems)

This can be a bad battery ... Bad wiring ... Bad connections ... Not wiring directly to the battery as recommended in the forums ...ie ...wiring to a fuse panel ...

Eliminate the power related possibilities and test ...

Then we can diagnose further if needed ...

bassmaster:
I had to send my 1197 back in twice because of screen problems.
They do happen from time to time.
Check the obvious first:
Charge your battery and have it load tested.
Autozone/advance auto will do this for free.
It doesn't matter how new the battery is, or if you know it's good.
Check all electrical connections as Rickie recommends.

Vertical stripes on a dark screen - is faulty memory module. Return to the factory for service.

I was getting full power. had my uncle who is an electrician check and was getting 12.6 volts so it wasn't a power issue. Humminbird said to send it in, which I had to pay 30 shipping. I wouldn't normally let that bother me but after months of saving over a grand for this unit, and it going bad on me in less than a year kind of sucks. Not to mention tournaments for me start next week and night fishing is prime right now and ill be without my unit. If this was past the year warrenty would I be shit out of luck? Also do they usually send a brand new one or fix the problem? Is it a re occurring problem in many units? Any ideas on how long until they have it back to me?
thanks Gio

12.6 volts means you have power.
It doesn't mean you have current flow (amperage).
Your battery could have enough power, but still be bad.

The next time you ever need to send a unit in, ask for a prepaid mailing
label.  Humminbird does not advertise this, but they will give you one if
you ask.  Depending on when your warranty expires and the nature of the problem, they may not charge you if the warranty has expired.  I think that most of the time, they try and repair the unit that was sent to them.
Good Luck.

I think if you ask for a supervisor when you talk to customer service they will send you a shipping label.

What voltage does your unit say you have?  Did he check the voltage with the unit connected or with the power cord disconnected?
As itgeek says, if you have a poor connection somewhere, the voltage may read just fine with the cable disconnected to the unit ..... When you connect the unit you me get a voltage drop because a  poor connection cannot supply the current needed when under load.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

A rare problem.
Repair 1-2 days. Sometimes the repair or replacement of the unit. It depends on the complexity of repair.
