I'm currently trying to hook up my Uniden Oceanus D UM415 to my 997c and can not get the Uniden to get the gps info. I am using the white and black wires from the GR50 and the green and bare wires from the Uniden unit, respectively in that order. Did I hook that up wrong or did I miss something?

Your connections look right. Have you gone into the navigation menu on the HB and turned NMEA out "ON"?

Lockdown:
If both the GPS and the Uniden have power, and are working,
I'd just hook the white gps wire (NMEA out) to the green Uniden wire (NMEA in).

I do have the NMEA out turned on. I will try this again after my trip since I've already covered up all the connections.

Ok. While on my trip, I had my VHF radio turned on and after about 15mins it wanted my location input but the connection isn't made for this. I'm now at home and tried again but it's not working. Maybe Greg can chime in on this.

I went through this and entering a MMSI on an ICOM two weeks ago. Other than connecting the two wires and turning on the HB NMEA out, all you should need is a position fix on the HB. The manual on your unit (page 36) states ...

What wires did you use to make your connections?
Do I need to add a MMSI number?
And as for that 15min comment, I don't even understand it after reading it. .lol

White Wire, NMEA Out	<=====>	Yellow: NMEA IN (+)
Black Wire, Ground	<=====>	Green: NMEA IN(-)

Other than making the connections you made, turning on the NMEA Output menu and having the GPS Receiver outside where it can get a position fix; that is all I know to do.

I have turned NMEA output to on in the menu. I have tried with the boat inside and outside of the garage, no difference. What kind of voltage should I be getting with the white wire? should there be a voltage difference between NMEA on and off? Would you happen to have the pinouts?

I have hooked the white wire to pin 2 and black wire to pin 5 of a 9pin serial plug. I ran hyperterminal and received no response with 4800-8n1-hw. I do not want to send this unit back in again! Last time was a faulty door/SD card slot issue which is probably from poor design.

Ok. Here is my update.

I have connected my GR50 to my matrix 12 and turned NMEA to on and everything works. No change in wiring or anything.
I did send my 997c in last october for an out of warranty repair. Do you think they will fix this for free?

That's a good test and some positive results. I assume you are getting a position fix on both the 997 and the Matrix. It sounds like it may be a cable connection issue. Is the cable that connects the GR50 to the matrix 12 the same model as the one that connects the GR50 to the 997 (i.e. could you swap the connection cables between units)?

Sorry, but I have to ask ==> What is included in "everything works"? What are you looking to get out of getting the NMEA data to your VHF?

LocDown, I spoke with one of the Techs that have tested the DSC radios with our units. They said that sometimes you have to make an additional ground wire connection from the radio to the black ground wire of the GPS Receiver to get this to work. I asked if that would apply as this worked with your Matrix 12 and they said that it may and that there was no way to be sure without trying it first. So if there is an additional ground wire in your VHF radio’s wiring connections; try connecting it. Otherwise it sounds like the NMEA data transfer circuitry in your 997 unit is out.

If that does not work; is there a Green wire from the GPS Receiver or is there a Red wire? I may have a connection option for you.

@Drifter,
I just disconnected the gr50 cable from the 997 and plugged it into the Matrix12 unit. I get location fix on both units.
Everything as in my location, speed, time, date ..gps info if I were to send a distress call the operator or whomever would know my position.

I have tried the additional ground wire and it did not affect it any.
I have disconnected my weathersense along with the Y cable and connected the gr50 puck directly to the unit and still no output.

..With the Matrix 12, I didn't change or add any connections to make it work.
GPS receiver has the red wire. I wish it had the Green wire so I could receive locations from calls.

Short of sending your 997 unit in again to get the NMEA output fixed the only other thing that you could do (at your own risk!) would be to splice into the longer main GPS Receiver cable. The Green wire there is the NMEA 0183 output directly from the GPS Receiver. Just tap into that and your DSC radio should work regardless of which unit you have connected to it.

Greg, yes. Nmea input for the 997 from the vhf if the caller is sending their location with the call.

I thought that was me just reading it wrong while I was craving something sweet (I’m trying to stay on a diet…

Glad the green wire connection got it working. The newer GR50 GPS Receivers replaced the Red wire with this same Green wire at the NMEA pigtail wire connection.

Yes it does. The difference between these is:
- White wire connection: this is post unit processed and has the water depth and water temperature added to it. There is a 1 second delay in this data output versus “live” from the GPS Receiver. The NMEA data sentences have our “$IN” prefix.
- Green wire connection: this is a live data feed straight from the GPS Receiver. No water depth or temperature information is added by the unit and there is no delay. The NMEA data sentences have the “$GP” prefix.

The Green wire was exchanged for the Red wire (+12V accessory power) during a redesign. Some other company’s devices would not recognize the “$IN” prefix that we were using, though most will except either.

The last GR16 GPS Receivers have this same Green wire as well.
