898C SI High Speed
« on: March 07, 2012, 07:46:23 PM »
New to Hummingbird always a Lowrance user but began losing confidence in their products. I know that hummingbird makes a great product and only hope my problem is operator error. I have the transducer mounted above the drain plug on a 2001 Ranger 205 225 Yamaha, clear all around. SI reads well both side but cant get over 5   MPH is this normal
1. Unit wont read on plane nothing nota, big problem where I fish need reading bad.
2. DI not as clear as advertised
What can I do about loosing bottom contact on plane?

dkenney, The SI/DI goes to lunch above 5 mph on all my units, that just it is!.

Most of us SI/DI users have to a second transducer for reading depth speed. in some cases a in hull or a through hull transducer and a TS3 switch.

Hi i dont know how the rear end of your boat looks, but the face of your transducer should be 1/8 to 1/4 beneath the transom. and 15 inches to the side of your engine. this is the guide lines in the owners maual. but you`ll have to find the best option for your boat, steps and ribs will also make turbulense, so try to mount it a place where it has a non obstructed sight forward as well as to bouth of the sides. i also found this pic on a french site, so i guess that if you have got everything perfect high speed imaging would be possible. :) his speed is aprox 24 miles, it reads 90 feet to each side and its 30-31 feet deep. quite impressive.

and my thought of non obstructed view forward is nothing underneath the hull that create turbulense.  :)

try to match your chart speed to boat speed (mph)

If mounted in the right location on your boat (if it is even possible on your boat) the Si will read at high boat speeds but will not be able to show any detail this is from my ole' 987 unit with the transducer mounted in a lucky spot on a Skeeter Bay boat:

Look at the depth also.  While the ping rate may be fast the definition will be less.  Here the display shows that si at 85 feet is not good at all at speed.  In shallower depths (less than 25) you will get better detail..
Not as good as slow speed but some definition.
Would be interesting to know your ping rate on that picture..
Could that old code have a bearing on the display.  what would it look like on new code...
Also did not know the WFG was that deep.  wow....
