No picture on screen???
« on: April 02, 2011, 01:31:34 AM »
Well i got the new 898 c si yesterday in the mail.So tonight i got out the batt hooked it up all the buttons lit up but no picture on the screen.I got a flashlight and i could see the picture when i shine the light on it.I hit the power button i seen the light option and i made sure that the power level was on 10 which should have made the back light as bright as it can get but nothing....So it looks like i got a broke unit... :'(  .....Just my luck well there goes the weekend plans of installing it on my boat...I'm just glad i tried it before i wired it up in the boat or i would be feeling like this. >:D This is my first humminbird unit and well i gotta say we're not off to a good start.I will give humminbird one more shot if something else happens then its gonna be...HDS 7 time......

Are you sure you have the power hooked up to the right polarity .  Call the vendor have them send you another one.

Did you check the power supply for a good charge. I am guessing you are using a battery.
A check with a meter may show 12 volts but this is a static display and not a load check. If using a battery make sure it is charged and working. One weak cell in the battery can make all the difference.
It kinda of seems power supply but the only way is to make sure you are giving 12 volts with amperage. Can you try another supply?
If using a 110 converter make sure the amps out is greater than 1.

I double checked the hook up its right. The battery I'm using i took outta my boat which 2 days before my vhf,nav lights, bilge pump, baitwell, trim and just everything worked fine.So its definitely not the battery. From what i read on this forum it sounds like this has happend to a few guys. The screen wouldn't power up straight outta the box.So today i will be  sending it back and hopefully the next one will work fine.Fishing here on long island is rapidly approaching.....

Double Digit,
Sounds like the display is working but that the backlighting is not.  Unfortunately this is one area where mishandling of the unit during shipping can show up.  I used to do shipping simulation tests and know that this is one area where it will show.  Our units can pass the standard drop tests but if someone gets a little too rough with them, than the CCFL backlighting can break.  Don’t know that this is what happened in your case though but we have done some secretive shock testing by shipping units back and forth before and it is amazing to see how often some mishandle packages.

Rudiger,
Try slightly bending the pins on the power cable outwards away from each other to get a more positive connection between the power cable and power connector on the unit.

So what are the options for DD?????
Should he be talking to the suplier and getting this thing returned.
Who is responsible for the shipping condition?
How much time does he have left?

I bought the unit from dicks i ordered it online from them.I have a dicks down the block so Saturday i brought it to the store. No questions asked they reordered me another one will be here Wednesday.I'm a truck driver and know first hand how freight is handled i see it everyday.I cant tell you how many times i delivered something to a private house just to see the person get disappointed because when we open the box their merchandise is damaged.Dicks was real great about the whole thing i couldn't be happier with their service.I just hope the UPS guys take it easy this time.I'm running outta time its starting to get nice out and i need to get this unit installed on my boat ASAP...I will let you guys know the  how it plays out....Jim

Brand new out of the box the vendor is responsible for replacing unit return shipping etc.
When you need to send your unit in for warrenty work you pay to ship unit
to HB they pay the shipping back.  Gary

Glad Dicks is helping you.  Isnt it amazing how much damage shipment there is.  But considering the amount of shipping maybe it is not too bad. Only for the guy that gets the damaged box.
Something else to consider.
When you receive a damaged container take pictures with date and time.  This may help later.
