I have recently replaced my 797 with a 998. I'm also considering replacing my current vhf radio with a newer model that has the DSC function for emergency use, where it transmits a location when connected to the gps unit. I need to know how or if I can connect the radio to the 998. Thanks.
Also loosing depth accuracy at higher speeds (over ~20mph), especially in water with a chop. I installed per instructions, but do I need to go up, or down to help with this.

AWESOME!!! Thanks Roddy....Im watching a DSC video from the Coast Guard on YouTube now...
-
Roddy, tell me more about ASI. Thanks.
-
Roddy, the West Marine VHF580 apparently is a Uniden made VHF. According to Unidens website here is what they list:
Orange: NMEA OUT (-)
Black: Ext. Speaker (-) GND
Green: GPS Data IN (+)
Red: External Speaker (+)
Bare wire: Ground
Yellow: NMEA OUT (+)
Humminbird: Red: 12 volt OUTPUT Only
Black Wire: Ground
White Wire NMEA Out
Any ideas?
Was great talking to you today on the phone!!

Ed; Witch uniden modle did you look at? Roddy

BWK-Tommy; Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a short range coastal tracking system. It works with the ASI capeable VHF radio and GPS. Sends ID and pos of your boat and rec other boats info (DIS,Heading, speed,ID and pos). Real cool.
It can be run to a chart plotter too.
I have a Standard Horizon GX2100,HB 987/947 set up That I just love!
If you have a SATPHONE-CELLPHONE-HF-VHF-DSC-ASI-EPER Going off someone has got to know you need help!

Roddy,
Called Uniden and the tech guy actually emailed me the 580 owners/install manual. The info/ wiring description I posted came directly from the PDF file he sent. I have to say the guy was real nice and within 5 minutes I had the manual. Im unsure of the connections as of now.

Way to go! Nice talking with you. Dont forget to REG the DSC.

Roddy, thanks for the AIS info. Although I have seen the description, I wasn't aware of what it does.

This is how I think that the wires should be connected:
Humminbird NMEA pigtail wire White (NMEA Output) to DSC Radio Green (GPS Data In +)
Humminbird NMEA pigtail wire Black (NMEA Ground) to DSC Radio Bare wire (Ground)
Humminbird NMEA pigtail Red wire (+12V) – DO NOT CONNECT!
Be sure to set the NMEA Output menu to the On setting.
-
Greg, Question........
Humminbird NMEA pigtail wire White (NMEA Output) to DSC Radio Green (GPS Data In +)
Humminbird NMEA pigtail wire Black (NMEA Ground) to DSC Radio Green (GPS Data In +)
^^^(Shouldnt this be connected to the bare ground wire?)^^^
Humminbird NMEA pigtail Red wire (+12V) – DO NOT CONNECT!

Whatever do you mean Ed?
That’s what I stated... >:D
Okay, I’m busted. :-[
I was in a hurry to get to class and copied the first line and forgot to replace the Green wire from the DSC radio with the Bare wire from the DSC radio… I went back and corrected my previous post. ;D
-
Ha...No worries at all....I appreciate the help Greg as always....Im bringing the boat to my shop and get it wired up, just wanted be sure on the connections so I didnt fry a board or something....Should take me all of 10 minutes to make the connection....I go offshore so I think having the DSC will be a good thing....
Thanks again Mr Greg
-
UPDATE: All went easy and well with the hookup for DSC...Works great....Sorry for the delay in updating, I had to search for this post to reply...Thanks Roddy and Greg!!
-
Good!! Now add AIS. Roddy >:D
-
Im going to look into that for the Donzi (yes I have 2 boats) No more room on the 21ft to add another VHF...The 35ft Donzi has dual garmin 5212's and no VHF yet so I'll look for a good VHF for that boat....Im such a newbie I dont really know the differences between the two...guess I should research it
-
Ed ; Check out Standard Horizon 2100, it has DSC and AIS. Thats the unit I use.($450.00US). Roddy >:D

I will...Thanks Roddy!!
