My 997 on the console has been shutting down when I get up on plane or running on plane. It has been increasing in frequency as it used to happen 1x in 8 hours and now it happens everytime I'm running. Connection or unit issue you think?
-
Certainly check your connection(s).
Check the forum for issues with the pins. Check out the Rgecy suggestion of slightly bending the pins to get a better contact.
Does the unit share the power source with any other electronic?
Another area to check is the fuse connection. This connection can sometimes lose contact pressure.
Let us know of findings.

IMHooked,
Welcome to the forum! The pins on the power connector fit losely and can lose contact sometimes. Slightly bending the pins outward should help the problem.

Thanks guys! I'll give it a try. To further clarify...is it the pins at the connection to the unit (on the console) OR are you talking about the connection between unit and the battery?

Check the connection on the unit first. I had this happen on the 798. It was the pins on the connector.

The connector to the unit.

I had the same problem, I found that the battery that was running the unit had its days so the finder shutdown when I cranked the main motor. After replacing the battery all is sorted!

Bending pins helped somewhat (frequency of shutting down has decreased). However I'm still getting that "surge" shutdown (i.e. putting the boat in gear, trimming, cranking the big motor). Also on plane today when hitting a wave going 25-30 that would make it shut off as well.
Batteries "should" be good. Always charged new Optima 31's. Connection and fuses next for trouble shooting?

Yep, connections, fuse and fuse holder would be the next things to check. Even better would be to run new wires and a new fuse holder (automotive blade type seem to work best) to ensure you have the proper wire gauge all the way from the battery as well as good soldered connections. I would give the battery posts a good cleaning and a wiggle too while you are at it. We had a battery on one of the work boats here that had a loose terminal post after less than a year of usage that caused problems like this.
