HELIX 9 GPS UPGRADE QUESTION

(1/1)

metalman:
Anyone with actual experience of improved GPS performance from an external puck.....

Will the addition of the AS GRP or the AS GPS HS puck make enough of an improvement to the GPS performance of the Helix 9 to justify the cost, (not that it's that expensive) or is it just an accessory that sounds good but doesn't really bring anything to the table?

Thanks.

While the accuracy specs of an external GPS antenna is the same as the internal GPS antenna  ... you will gain efficiency from an external GPS puck by being able to mount it closer to the transducer  ...

In a scenario where the transducer is on the transom and the head unit is at the console using the internal GPS = this instills a distance error in waypoints by an error equal to the distance between the internal GPS antenna and the transducer  ...

Additionally - the AS GPS HS antenna has an added feature of a magnetic compass inside the puck which allows the puck to know which direction is North East South or West. This feature allows the boat icon on Chart views to remain stable and oriented even while the boat is stationary  ...

Rickie,
Thank you for the reply.
So, basically, unless I can mount the puck pretty close to the xducer, there is no benefit from the AS GRP at all and only the compass feature of the AS GPS HS....yes?
As the internal antenna accuracy and the puck accuracy are the same, is there any reception advantage to the puck... wherever it might be mounted?

Thanks.

You are correct on all questions  ...

The guts/parts of the external are the same guts/parts that are in the internal  ...
