Title: Transducer switch TS 3
Post by: bobxxx on October 15, 2011, 01:05:53 PM
I've just installed the ts3 switch which ether selects my si and 2d transducer or my hockey puck thru hull duel beam sonar.Thinking I would just switch between transducer #1 and # 2,I find out I need to also go to menu and select 2d or si which is extra steps in the process.  Is switching  transducer in menu necessary.I only use the thru hull hocky puck for fast running.I would leave the menu in si
Thanks

Hi Bob

I do not believe you have to do anything.  I have a SI transducer on the Starboard side of my transom and a Quadra Beam on my trolling motor using the same 1197 head via a switch for both transducers.  The 2D transducers are the same, I only use the menu to make changes when I want to go view QuadraBeam or Side Imaging.

I would make the menu change.  When switched to the inside-the-hull DualBeam transducer your 798 unit is still transmitting out the Si sonar pulses.  It is doing so on a cable that may not have the correct load rating and therefore could cause a failure of the Si sonar transmitter in your unit.  The same thing that can happen if you plug up an extension cable to your 798 unit without a transducer attached to it.  Maybe it won’t fail and maybe it will.  Me, I would switch the menu (actually I would have use the AS-Si-DB_Y cable as I am too lazy to install a switch and do all that menu changing and switch toggling!).

When George toggles his transducer switch, his Si unit is transmitting to the side beam elements inside of the QuadraBeam transducer.  The Si transmitter is then under a correct enough load so no damage occurs.

My understanding was on the unloaded cable length it had to be longer than the 2 feet of the switch cable.  I was told in an earlier question that you cannot use an extention cable by itself with out a transducer hooked up because of the mismatch of load and this causes the transmitter to blowup.
Also when you switch the T3 it only switches the transmitter to the new position (transducer) and no mismatch will occur.  Unless you have wired your cables yourself without regard to length.

I am trying to get confirmation from Engineering that you do or do not need to make the menu change when using the newer TS3 Transducer switch.  Until then I will error on the side of safety to the unit and recommend changing the menu.

Thanks Greg

Good news:
For those of you with a Side Imaging + DualBeam transducer setup with the TS3 Transducer Switch - the Engineers say that it is fine to toggle the TS3 switch back and forth without changing the Transducer select menu.

I wasn’t sure whether the loading really was the same on this switch as it was on the older TS2-W switch but evidently it is.  So go forth and toggle (the TS3 that is)!

Then TOGGLE it is.
Thanks fellows
