Side Scan Software Development
« on: April 27, 2012, 02:28:22 PM »
I have a Lowrance SS HD - I hope you don't hold that against me.

I am going to develop my own mapping software based on the side scan data I can obtain via Lowrance's SL2 file.

I hope this is the group of DIY'ers that correct for that topic.

Does anyone know if HB's or L's data is RAW or is it post processed by their hardware.

Thanks in advance.

Joe

This  forum has a  lot of knowledgeable folks who are experienced in mapping and code sentences..
Primarily this forum is for the HB products but you may find some activity here as mapping is not a single company operation..
Conversion of data stream to some useable format is possible but it does take some back ground in computer language.
Hopefully someone will be able to assist you...

Thanks

I've read a nice article "Data correction for visualization and classification of sidescan SONAR imagery" and it addresses several corrections that need to be applied to the raw data.  That is why I was asking if HB or L provides raw data or somewhat processed data in the files?

The article speaks to corrections based on "altitude" of the tow fish.  Since the transducer is 6 inches below the bottom of the boat I would think that Altitude data would closely match depth data - but L's Altitude data does not.  I also have access to "Track" data in rads.  Can someone enlighten me to the significance of "Track" data with respect to side scan data.

I am currently removing the water column from the side scan data and will be moving it into mosaic mapping in the future.

Is there anything to gain by modifying the side scan data based on information obtain from down scan data?

Thanks.

Joe

You just went 10,000 feet over my head Joe....... ;D
there are some Geo folks here who may be able to help, and a couple of  moasic developers also..
Lowrance used to let us at their raw data stream. Have not tried to do any thing with it relative to the new HD systems..
Again here we are more aligned with HB..
