Screen black after 997 SI update v5.840
« on: September 10, 2011, 09:15:49 AM »
Anyone else having problems after updating to firmware version 5.840? The unit seems to be functioning but most of the screen is black. I've tried several installs (after reverting to v5.450 each time and restoring defaults) and the result is always the same. The install completes. The unit restarts. The initial screen looks fine. But then the unit becomes operational, it is almost all black.

I put the new 5.840 in my 997 last night and it
appears to be doing well along with HBPC
waypoint update. Gary

Sounds crazy but this worked for me. After posting my question, I continued to try to find a solution. I reloaded v5.840 one more time. This time however, when the Humminbird logo appeared, I pushed menu to select startup options, and changed start up from normal to simulation. I pressed exit on the next page and it started in simulator mode and worked fine. After checking several views, I exited simulation mode into normal mode and it worked. Don't know why this would fix it or if it will stay fixed. But I tested it on the water and it worked OK.

When you update your unit you want the unit to start in normal mode only. Gary

To be clear, Gary. I did restart the unit in normal mode after the update. It does this automatically. But the screen was black. I then turned the unit off and restarted it. It was on the second restart that I choose simulation.

Where was you updating the unit at home or on the water in normal mode at home the screen is going to be any color you
have choosen. you will not get any information with the tranducer out of the water. Now you will get infor. in simulator mode
with the tranducer out of the water but you want to update the head in normal mode only. Gary

Thanks for the tip...took it out to the boat and did the update out there, worked fine.  Will test on the water this afternoon.

Jim that is why I ask you if you done the update at home on the bench or on your boat in the water
if your on the bench at home your unit will not start up in normal mode unless the transducer is hooked up.

Thanks your help Gary. I was inside. but the transducer was hooked up. I have my 997 rigged as a portable unit. So it had the GPS antenna and transducer hooked up. This is the only update I had a problem with. But it works great now.

Jim
