Title: 587ci/597ci
Post by: fisherman on April 19, 2010, 10:10:39 AM
I am looking at the 587ci/597ci, as I don't get in water much deeper than 20ft in the marshes of LA. So, I don't think the SI would be of any help.  Any thoughts on this out there?

Fisherman,

Welcome to the forum!  Why are you going away from Side Imaging? It works great in shallow water!  I use mine in less than 30' of water 90% of the time!  And I think that most users/fishermen are in less than 20' of water!

There is no comparison!

You have a good point.  But, that 20ft of water is in the open , when I get into the marsh average depth is 2-3ft.  I just don't see where the si would be of help. Don't get me wrong, I am intrigued by the thought. But, like most, I have to justify that $ amount to the better half.
So, back to the question, would I not get a lot of scatter in this shallow of water, most of the slews are only about 15-20ft wide.
I appreciate the answers.

we ran sonar in 3 to 5 foot of canal where the width was about 30 to 40 feet.   good sonar and not scattered.  this was SI not DI.   You should be fine with your depths.  and get a good idea of the side to side.  look for hols or beds.

I use a 587 on our work boat and it works great.  Of course in shallow water like you're talking about you can't expect more than depth readings.  You might have to play with the settings a little to reduce noise on the screen at 2-5' depths.
As mentioned, the si on my fishing boat works great even in shallow depths, but if you don't need the si, the units you mentioned will do just fine, I think.
