Combining a Humminbird 507 c2 with a 898c HD SI
« on: April 03, 2013, 06:06:13 PM »
Do I have to use a separate transducer for each of these models. I want to put the 597 at my console and the 898c HD SI at the bow. Is there anyway to have them both operate from the same transducer? If not is it OK to put 1 transducer on the the left side of the transom and 1 on the right side. They are both Side Image.

You could use a unit switch and switch back and forth with one transducer.

Probably wouldn't do too well to have them side by side on the stern.

Don,
If that is a 500 series unit that you have and it has the Si sonar, than it has to be the 598ci HD Si model.

As Robert said you could use a Unit Switch (US3) and change back and forth to connect one unit or the other (not both at once) to the same transducer.  There is no way to network or share the sonar data to or from a 500 series unit like the 598ci HD Si.  You would need at least a 798ci HD Si unit for this.

A Si transducer on each side of the transom should show a lot of interference in the Si sonar as both transducers will have a beam pointed directly at the other transducer.  There may also be sonar interference in the 2D sonar.

Greg,

Thank you for your response but that is not what I wanted to hear. The 597 that I have is still new in the box but probably at least 3 or 4 years old and it is a 597 C2, those are the only letters and numbers on the box. The small print says it is SI. When I talked to someone at Bass Pro Shop they told me I could not switch the two units as you suggested because you could only hook the 700 series and up and not the 500 series.

When I talked to Humminbird help service they said one SI on each side of the transom would be OK because the beams were slightly slanted downward and if they were separated by 5 or 6 feet the they would miss each other.

If what you said about the switching is true using the TS3 that would solve my problem and would only use the transducer from the 898C HD SI because I don't need to use them both at the same time. I just did not think the 597 would function using the 898's transducer.

This can't be the first time someone has tried to do this because nearly everyone has depth finders at the console and at the bow.

Confused Don

I am confused as well Don as what you stated for a model name (“597 c2”) is not one that we have made.  If that is a 3 to 4 year old 597 unit, than it is probably a 597c or a 597ci model unit as we had not started making the 597ci HD and 597ci HD DI model units until the 2011 model year.  None of these models I mentioned are Side Imaging units.

I modified my post above so that it would be correct but will also mention it here: the switch you would need to connect one transducer to two units would be the US3 Unit Switch.

For all but the 597ci HD DI model unit I mentioned above – you can connect both units to the US3 Unit Switch and use the 898’s HDSi transducer.  Either unit will work with this transducer but only one at a time.  The 597 unit will have its full 200/83kHz 2D sonar capability as the HDSi transducer uses the same 200/83kHz sonar that the (non-DI) 597 units do.

The 455kHz Si sonar beam from the CSi or HDSi transducers project outwards and upwards from the transducers.  Many on this web site can confirm that.  The 800kHz Si sonar beam projects downwards at a slant.  I would like to know whom you spoke with at Humminbird so that they will be able to give the correct answer next time they are asked this.
