Holes on the back of a 798 HD
« on: December 31, 2012, 05:06:11 PM »
I was searching for info on these holes & found this post.

hope this isn't out of line.but  one question. My 798  has 2 open screw holes on the back of the unit.Does yours have them  .they are threaded. 1 brass ,the other plastic.I dont want water getting in.
Bob

Nobody answered him & I just got a 798 & it has them. I was wondering what the holes are for.

Not real sure but could be the screw holes for in dash mounting. If so they should be water tight. Can you take a picture of the back so we can be sure of what is being talked about.

take a picture with a camera and file it on your computer. A good idea is make it a jpg file type. easier to download here.
Then go to the forum and select reply like you have done type in your words in the message area.
Look below the message area and you will see a tab called Attach: just below that is a blank area and to the right is the tab browse
Select browse and go to the file on your computer and double click it (open) and it will put the file in the blank area just referenced.
Then hit post.
If you have problems get back to me..

Here you go Chuck, the flash was a little bright. You can see the bottom one is a threaded brass insert & the top is just a hole & it might be threaded I'm not sure. One other thing I need a new transducer is there an advantage to using the bigger (898-1198) ones or disadvantages. I'm sure there are thread about this if anyone could give me a heads up.. Thanks

Good picture. You did fine with that. I am not sure of the brass screw as I could not find anything on dash mounting. the top hole I have no idea. But with the picture there are a lot of guys here with the unit so they should jump in.
I dont know if a larger transducer will do much as the unit is limited on frequencies. Again the users of the unit can answer this with their experience. Sit tight for a bit and lets see what other posts hit the thread.
Good job with the picture .....it takes some of the folks a while to figure out the picture attach..

These holes are for the dash mount, and they are waterproof even when nothing in them. They are just molded in the casing.

Thanks, Xsil.....I looked at the hb book for the 798 and it has nothing on the dash mount.  I looked at the spec for the 798 and it lists Optional In-dash but no link or reference.
wonder how a person is supposed to figure this out.

Check the manual for the dash-mount bracket for the 700 series.

I had an in-dash mount and that's what the holes are for.  They won't leak even left empty.  I hated the in-dash mount, and changed it back to the bracket style.
