Lost GPS Signal 798si
« on: May 01, 2012, 12:50:08 AM »
hello all,
my 798si has worked perfectly for 12 months or so, then the gps stopped working. All other functions are ok, says gps not connected on status screen. Is it common for the receiver to fail,  or is it more likely a problem with the unit? All wiring and connections look fine. any ideas?

Is your 798 unit as the internal antenna, or an external one.

If you have an external one, you could check the connection and/or the quality of the cable for defects, pinch, cuts

I would say that it is more likely that the GPS Receiver failed though they do not do so very often.  If there is someone else that you know of that has a Humminbird unit that has an external GPS Receiver; try connecting your unit up to it (can be done while the boat is out of the water) to see if your unit will start up and display the Chart Views and have GPS functions.

I sent Humminbird my 798ci SI Combo for the same problem.
Unit was returned with a note that said NO PROBLEM FOUND
it worked OK for a couple of trips then in the fog this morning
NO GPS called Humminbird and was told if not broke we can not fix.

terry0540:
Let me get this straight.
This is what I understand, and please correct me if I'm wrong.

Your unit has an internal GPS antennae.
Initially, your status screen said that that GPS was UNCONNECTED.
You sent it in to HB.
HB couldn't find anything wrong with it, and didn't do anything.
You got the unit back and used it for awhile.
The status screen now says the same thing, that the GPS is UNCONNECTED.

And Humminbird says there's nothing wrong with it?
Sorry, this story is hard for me to believe.

It would seem to me that for an internal GPS system, if the status screen
EVER said that the GPS is UNCONNECTED, then the GPS module has burned out
or is not working, or the motherboard is fried.

This should be a red flag to anybody that the unit needs to be repaired.

Greg,
What about it?

Customer Service said when they tested the unit it was working correctly.
This I can understand but it does not give the customer a reliable unit
that he can count on. I am disappointed that I was not called to discuss
ways to resolve this problem. Now with the double cost in shipping and time lost is
is unacceptable and if they do the same again will it be 3-10 more trips back.
They will send a shipping label but it is not insured

Well, since it's an internal GPS, I don't see
that there is anything you can do to resolve the problem.

Given that you have fully charged and load tested your battery,
and that you have checked that your power connections are good.
And, that you have your chart/gps view Visible:
I don't know what more you are supposed to do.

It's a bummer you're having so many problems with the unit.
I hope you get it fixed.

Terry,
I spoke with the CRC Supervisor.  She will make sure that they get you taken care of when your unit comes in again.  Sorry for the problems here but it sounds like there is something intermittent in your unit.  If we send you a shipping label than it is insured but not always for the full amount of the product.  No problem for you though as that is on our end and we will be out the difference in cost to replace the unit.

Thanks Humminbird.
Once again stepping up to the plate.
I know intermittent problems are the most difficult to fix
but the most frustrating for the customer.

Thank you for going to bat for a member of this forum.
I sure hope that HB realizes and appreciates what a true asset you are to the company.
I'm sure everyone on this site is aware of it.

I think Greg should be promoted to President of Humminbird.
That way, the forum members here can get the deluxe service on
our units, and get some free stuff from time to time. :)

I'd be happy to be a beta-tester on the new 1199 units which
will probably be out next year. :)

Thanks for the accolades but all I did was make a phone call.
If any of you run into a problem that seems to be intermittent, than I suggest that you call and ask that if nothing is found wrong with your unit (or accessory) the next time you send it in; that it have the internal circuitry replaced or something.  As a Technician in the Service Department (many years ago…) I found it very frustrating to get test a unit and not find anything wrong with it.  Often times if the problem may be accessory related; the Tech will often send a replacement accessory to try (Ex: no bottom reading, so a new transducer is sent) – but that cannot be done with the unit itself.

798 shattered
This is a long shot, but it accutally happened to me. After receiving my unit and transducer back from repair,
I had to reinstall on the boat. During the assembly, I didn't get the GPS cable end properly seated in the collector.
Look to make sure that the pins are even with the others in the collector.

I have a 788ci HD DI that has been on the water 3 times.  Today (the third time) this same issue occurred on my Unit.  It says the GPS is disconnected, thus I had no navigation nor speed displayed on my Sonar screens.  I submitted this issue to Humminbird Customer service a couple minutes ago.  This is very discouraging since my Unit is brand new.  Any help with this was be appreciated.

Bartmanmn,
You have an internal GPS unit.  If it is saying that the GPS Receiver is not connected than the problem is more than likely in the unit itself and it would need to be shipped in to be tested and fixed.  Just make sure that the unit has adequate power before sending it in.  Do this by direct connecting the power cable to the battery to test the GPS.

Unit is in the mail and expected to arrive in Eufaula on Wednesday.  Hopefully you all can get it straightened out and shipped back in a jiffy.

Thanks

My unit arrived in Eufaula early on Wednesday.  By late on Thursday I received a FedEx delivery confirmation number for the return of my Unit.  Hopefully it's running like new again.

Thanks for the quick turn around Humminbird Service Dept.
