Even Humminbird will not post that data... which I find really strange...!!
Would it be difficult to put it in the manual??

i didnt see it in the manual either....would be nice to know instead of trial and error....Im not sure how many saltwater fisherman are on this forum...I also think the Humminbird side scan works better in fresh VS saltwater...maybe its the density of the salt and water clarity...but thats a guess

Edward; I use my units in salt water 0-300' and have no trouble. Just change settings as needed. Roddy

Roddy, thanks...I am a newbie and still dialing in my settings. The original question was in the settings which to use...shallow or deep for saltwater (not for side scan)....curious to find out what HB deems shallow vs deep water.

Love the SI but like I said...still messing with the settings and getting clear definition on the side scan

I have had my unit for over a year and have been on these forums for awhile.  There have been some postings on settings but in the end it appears that everyone ends up setting their units to fit the way they use their units.  Play with your unit for awhile, nothing is sacred.  It is pretty much to learn what your unit could do.

I have had  the same question.  I have had mine set on shallow salt, since most of my fishing is less than 75 ft.  -- often less than 10.  I'm speculating, but maybe the distinction is inshore /nearshore v offshore.  We probably need to check with HB and see.

Do a search for "salt" or "saltwater" and some answers, such as this will come up:


"The Water Type menu changes the algorithm used to calculate water depth as well as changes some of the filter settings for things like surface clutter and the criteria that is used in assigning the different Fish ID Symbol sizes.

Not sure what the official reply is for the Salt (shallow) and Salt (deep ) settings but I would bet this changes by location since the salinity content and amount of surface clutter would change as well.  As long as the unit is tracking the bottom well I would leave it on the Salt (deep) setting.

I think that all of the settings are post-processing but one of the Software guys would have to confirm that to know for sure. "

I think that the magic water depth here is about 100 feet deep – but this is dependant on the surface clutter that is present.  I think that akgoff4’s answer is the best explanation I have heard so far.  Let me see if this makes sense to anyone: due to differences in water conditions (salinity, surface clutter, plus other water factors); what may work in one location on a particular day will not work in the same location on a different day or in another location on any day.

What or rather what is the actual difference in the readings between the two..Is this 10 feet more or less.
And in deep water what is the significance of correct reading?
What does this mean in terms of performance or is it more towards getting bait or lure to the proper place.?

I usually fish in less then 100ft and use the shallow setting. I tend to see more surface clutter and not as clear soundings if I use the deep setting. I was just curious to see what the difference may be. I notice a big difference when fishing the keys VS the gulf out of the St Pete / Tampa area. Definately more Salinity here local then the keys.
