Title: Helix 10 mega and Mercmonitor suddenly not talking to each other
Post by: Juicegoose on October 11, 2017, 10:28:45 AM
So about a 3 months ago i bought my helix mega. I also have an existing Mercury engine monitor that gets gps data direct from the helix via the accessory cable I had to buy from humminbird. I installed the cable, connecting the white/blue wire from the mercmonitor mnea -183 pigtail to the white wire on the accessory cable for the humminbird and connecting the brown wire from the mercmonitor nmea 0183 harness to the black wire in the humminbird harness. I setup the humminbird to output nmea 0183. All worked fine. This past weekend I noticed i wasn't getting gps data to the monitor though. Nothing seemingly changed and all wires looked the same. I reset everything to factory default and still nothing.
Couple Items I thought might be the culprit.
1. What talker id should i have the humminbird set to? (although i changed it to see if that was the issue it mae zero results so i'm just verifying.
2. I have a bunch of unused gauges on the dash and had been piggybacking all of my local grounds to one lug and then routing a single ground back to the house battery. I noticed though that i was getting some wicked interference when my trolling motor or any other bilge/aerator motor was on. Through troubleshooting I noted that if i isolated the grounds for the humminbird the issue went away. So i moved them to another ground lug.
for you power users out there how do you have yours wired and has anyone had issues with the unit not talking?
Also is there any way to verify if the humminbird is indeed outputing data?
