Title: Caution on updating 899C
Post by: hays47 on March 14, 2014, 12:43:31 PM
:( Went to do first update on my 899C. Followed the standard protocol disconnect from ethernet so unit is stand alone. Reset to default settings. Plugged card in and waited select yes to replace and no to abort.

Update begins after maybe a minute unit shuts down. At first I think part of update process. Wait for 15 minutes unit still off. Turn power on units goes into shutdown. Take card out turn unit on unit goes into shutdown. Disconnect everything turn unit back on shuts down again.

Call CS at Humminbird. They are going to send me FEDEX label for return to factory. First time I ever had a problem with update disabling my unit. One of the things update was supposed to fix was unit shutting itself off.

Units I have owned 981C , 987C , 997C , now own 1198C , 385 ICE and this 899C. Starting to regret this 899C.

Sorry to hear of your problems.
Did you have a stable power supply when doing the update?
Any kids, dogs, or cats running around to bump into anything?
How long have you had your 899c?

None of that occurred this was strictly the units fault. Humminbird sent me a FEDEX  shipping slip. Only problem the insurance is only good for 100.00. I am going to call FEDEX to see if I can buy extra insurance for this shipment.

HB knows the cost of this item. They should send you the correct return label with proper insurance...Updating code on HB has always been an issue. When it works it is fine .....  when it doesn't it is bad. I would think that by now they would have fixed the code update issue. This is the only product I know that has these kind of updating problems.. Have them send you a label capable of providing insurance.

Just got off phone with FEDEX. They told me since unit is defective that is all Humminbird allows. So if package is lost , stolen or doesn't get back to me. Humminbird would be responsible for replacing my unit.

So will do everything on my part to make sure it gets there.

It might only cost Humminbird $100 to replace that unit.

Make sure to keep copies of all paperwork and take good notes. It might be good to have email contact with HB and keep that copy also..
glad it seems to be working out for you. let us know what HB finds and how this turns out..

I don’t think so ITG.  I think that amount is a negotiated amount for any package we ship and not for individual packages.

Update- 25 May 2014      Humminbird replaced with different unit as serial number is different. Unit they sent back to me appears to be brand spanking new. Should I up date my equipment page to the new unit's serial no#

I would. And maybe wait on the updates until you hear some more news about them.......
