Title: Lost Lakemaster map on 998 SI
Post by: Buckeye Fan on October 29, 2013, 09:14:24 AM
I don't know what happened but I lost the lake map both the internal and the lake master chip on 998 HD SI. All the screen views are visible but no maps!  Anyone have any ideas what the issue might be?

Thanks,

Buckeye

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums Buckeye.

Tell us a little more about what is happened.  Did this happen while you were using it or was this when you turned the unit on?
This is in your 998c HD Si unit, right?
With the LakeMaster card out of the unit, do you get any of the background maps?
Check the GPS Diagnostic View and see what it is showing for the “Fix Type”.

Greg,

Yes it is a 998 HD SI.  It started last week at initial start up it did not fail during the day. I will take out the Lakemaster SD Card and restart to see what I get.  As far as the GPS Fix Type what do I want set on?

You don’t get to set the Fix Type Buckeye.  This is information that the unit displays which lets us know how many and what type of satellites it is tracking.
2D Fix = 3 of more satellites are being used.
3D Fix = 4 or more satellites are being used.
Enhanced = the WAAS satellites are being tracked.

I removed the Lake Master chip rebooted still no maps. I did a self check at start up the only thing that said  was connected was the water temp.  The GPS check said it was not connected. Is that the reason I have no maps showing up?  Really kinda sucks spending as much money as I did for this unit to have these problems after about six weeks of occasional use. Man I need some help.

Buckeye,
Now when you say that you are seeing “no maps” are you meaning that you get the Chart Views and only see a black display or do you mean that you are not getting the Chart Views at all?

I would try and cross-test your 998c HD Si unit on someone else’s boat that has a Humminbird unit with an external GPS Receiver.  It will not matter what model they have as any GPS Receiver that will plug into your 998 unit will work for the test.  Plug the power, transducer and GPS in by hand if you need to for the test.  This will show us whether your unit or the GPS Receiver is the problem.

If your unit does not work on the other GPS Receiver; contact the Humminbird Customer Resource Center to set up getting your unit and GPS Receiver back in to be tested and fixed.

If your unit does work on the other GPS Receiver; you need to check the NMEA pigtail wires to make sure they are not shorting out.  The NMEA pigtail wires are under the black plastic cap at the end of the shorter second wire that comes out of the GPS Receiver connector.  Remove the black plastic cap and separate the wires and test your unit again.  If it starts working; trim and rearrange the wires in the black plastic cap so that they are not shorted.  If it does not start working; contact the Humminbird Customer Resource Center to set up getting your GPS Receiver back in to be tested and fixed.
