1198si and 788c HD
« on: May 05, 2012, 09:46:50 PM »
I would like to put a new 788c HD (head unit only) in the bow with a ethernet cable to the 1198si at the console. Will i be able use see the 2d sonar on the 788cHd as I view other screens on the 1198? In other words can one still view 2d at bow while one is viewing side or down imaging at the 1198?
thanks,
Byron

Are you talking about viewing the sonar images from these two units at the same time
through just one unit?  I don't think this will work.

If you have a separate transducer on the 788c, I think you could
get images on that independently from  the 1198.
In other words, I think each of the units would display their own
set of images.
But, I don't think you could combine images from two units and display
them on one unit.

I'm just guessing.
Greg would be the authority on this.

You are right ITG.  You cant combine the displays..

Let me make sure I understand.
Are you asking if a split screen can show both transducers.  No
But you can (should) be able to see either transducer by selecting it from the menu.
In the case of a shared transducer you will only see that.
I will put the ethernet manual in the downloads.

Two units(1198 & 788HD) connected with the ethernet. One si/di transducer mounted on the transom and one puck glued in the hull  tied together with the y cable to the 1198. Can one view the 2D sonar constantly on the 788 HD in the bow, while one views different screens on the 1198 at the console? Hope this explains it!

I am thinking not.
the two transducers are connected to the 1198 which selects the transducer being used. either the 2d or the SI.
the ethernet will pass on the signal to the 798 from that which has been selected by the 1198.

At least that is my understanding..

Did you look at the ethernet manual for any help..

I think if you are physically at the bow, you can view the 788 sonar images on the 788 screen (which is at the bow).
I think if you are physically at the console, you can view the 1198 sonar images on the 1198
screen (which is at the console).

Unless you have interference issues, I can't see why you couldn't have both
of these going at the same time.

From the console unit, you won't be able to see any of the bow unit's images, only
gps coordinates.
From the bow, you won't be able to see any of the console's unit's images, only
gps coordinates.

I think the Y cable allows switching the transducers at the transom, so it will only
affect the sonar images displayed on the 1198.

If I'm wrong, please, somebody jump in here.

thats what I want to know, will y cable allow someone to sit in the bow with 788 and view depth/2D sonar, while I'm home at the console viewing the different sonar screens at the 1198!
thanks

I think, I'm not positive, but I think in your case, that the y cable
only applies to your 1198.
You will either select your High Definition Side Imaging Transducer on the
transom or your through the hull (for high speed 2d readings only).

I don't think it has anything to do with the 788.

In theory, if there are two people on your boat,
one can be up front enjoying the images from the 788, and
you can be at your console, enjoying the images from your 1198
(depending on what transducer you have selected: High definition or thru-hull).

The only thing I might add, is unless you have a very long boat,
you are most likely to experience some inteference between the two
sonars.

You may have to adjust your interference filters on the units.

There is no ducer up front tied into the 788 HD. only ducers are near/on transom connected through the y-cable.

Then, I think if you want to do what you are saying, you
must purchase transducer for the 788 and put it on a front
trolling motor.

Here is another option.
Forget about the 788 and get you a marine screen display only, and mount it up front.
Using the video output of the 1198, the person up front could
see exactly what you see on the 1198.

The AS-Si-DB-Y cable does not allow for any sort of switching or choosing of which transducer any unit can use.  It is simply a splitter cable that connects only the 2D sonar of the inside-the-hull transducer to the unit while at the same time connecting only the Si sonar and water temperature to the same unit.  With these two transducers connected to the 1198c Si unit; the 1198c Si unit sees only one HDSi transducer (which has 2D sonar, Si sonar and water temperature capabilities).

With the 788ci HD unit Ethernet connected to the 1198c Si unit; it should be able to display the 200/83kHz 2D sonar data that the 1198c Si unit is receiving from the transducers it is connected to.  The 788ci HD unit will be showing the same 2D sonar data that the 1198c Si unit is showing.  It can show this data with the 1198c Si unit displaying the Si sonar, Di sonar or Chart data information because the 1198c Si unit is still transmitting and receiving (and therefore sharing through the Ethernet connection) the 2D sonar data.

In this case the 788ci HD unit has nothing to do with the AS-Si-DB-Y cable because the sonar data it is receiving is shared through the 1198c Si unit.

Basically what BCLII is doing is using the 788ci HD unit as a marine monitor for the 2D sonar from the 1998c Si unit.

Thanks Greg, yes the 788HD will be used as a monitor up front for another person to watch the depth/sonar for jigging and drifting. Second thing is to have another unit if the 1198 would go down until that unit is up and running again.
Thanks guys,
Byron

Well I guess I screwed up, I bought a 788 HD DI in stead of a plain 788ci HD.
Hummingbird is telling me these to units are NOT sonar compatible with an ethernet connection. One can only view chart/navigation with the 788 DI UNIT. I'm returning DI unit for a 788çi HD.

Well I swamped out the 788 HD DI for the 788 HD. I still can not get the 788 HD to read the 1198 si ducer. Code says sonar lost. It does list the 1198si ducer in the network box but it is in light grey color and not bold  print.
What now?

If your 1198 is updated to the 6.xx software be sure your 788 is updated to the whatever the newest is that just came out.  For a little over a month I couldn't share my 898 transducer with my 798.  The 898 6.xx software came out and something changed in that software that really screwed up most of the ethernet stuff to the 798 series.

Wolf thanks, that was it! Works great,  wife happy!
now waiting on HB tech to tell me why my Airmar B 60 dual beam 50/200 keeps blowing out my y- cables on the 1198.
HB is good, they ordered the parts from Airmar and working on it now. This will good for all who use Airmar ducers with HB.
