I would not suggest doing it that way.  I was warned by one of the Software Engineers against doing this (but have not heard of anyone having problems yet).  I recommend doing it the way it was meant to be done - by using HumminbirdPC:

Profile is a .TXT file and can be edited by several programs.
This is also in the articles and tutorials by Jolly Rogers..
Does HBPC do something different than others?
Other than providing a screen with the 4 lines for update.
Possibly this could be a protection against writing on another line..which could then screw up the unit..
We all have to start thinking of these fishfinders as computers.
Which is why we are having problems with waypoints and trying to modify or import without the knowledge of what we are doing..or what the computer does..

As Chuck states the Profile.txt is the file you want, you can find it on your SD card used for making recordings.  I keep a copy of the original file in case I  run into issues, but if something goes wrong I believe if you erase the file from the card and the unit will generate a new file.

Below is a copy of my Profile text file for my 1198:  You will see that changes can be made to P1 thru P4, not sure if you can add any more then P4.

Profile:Ver.1.000
Ver.6.310;Dat.Apr 16 2012;Rev.0;Spd.534Mhz

I have found out the hard way when editing computer programs with a text editor offline and then importing it into another application that all text editors are not equal.  Some text editors .... even though you save the file as a .txt file will have special characters imbedded in the file that are not visible.  They are control characters that control spacing, paragraphs, end of line, etc, etc.
Until I learned this, I had wasted time editing a program offline and then importing it into the standard programming software only to have all kinds of problems that are caused by the invisible special characters.

I would go with Gregs suggestion and used the recommended editing method....just another thing that may prevent corrupt data in your unit.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

You are on track Bob.
these are now computers and we have to learn to be smarter when making changes.
If you are not a computer person then use thew factory tools.
If you understand computers you can side step.
The next thing is see is social media sonar.. ;D

Unless things have changed you do NOT want to use Notepad in Windows as it is not a true text editor. Back in my Windows days I used NoteTab as my text editor.  There are a few other pure text editors for Windows too.

Notepad will put extra characters in the file.

I used gedit in Linux to edit my file and did not have any issues.
