networking error - advanced 2d sonar signal lost?
« on: June 11, 2017, 03:36:16 PM »
my system consists of an 1198csi (bow) and helix 12 chirp si gps G1 (console).
the 1198 is connected to the helix 12 with a network cable (round connection to 1198, and rectangular plug adapter to the helix 12).
the 1198 is also connected to the bow mount trolling motor transducer (minn kota terrova - US2 with adapter cable).
the helix12 is connected to a transom mounted si transducer (XHS 9 HDSI 180 T)

the 1198 is configured (through the setup menu), to use the transom mounted transducer for the advanced 2d sonar signal.

the si images appear fine on the helix 12.
but i was hoping this configuration would enable 2d side imaging to be displayed on the 1198 (in order to view si images while sitting at the bow deck).
however, nothing appears on the side image screens of the 1198 (with boat stationary, or moving 5mph).
do i need to use a different setup configuration to obtain si images on the 1198 display?

in addition, about every 2 minutes the 1198 displays a network error message "2d advanced sonar signal lost.  use local yes/no?  [choose with arrow key input left/right]"  the error message essentially "freezes up" the 1198 for a few seconds until you clear this message manually.   however, even after the error message is cleared (by choosing option - no), the error reappears constantly.

i chose the "no" option with the logic of trying to use the transom transducer for si imaging on the 1198.
however, si imaging isn't appearing on the 1198, and the network error message will not go away.

is my only choice to change the 1198 setup configuration to utilize the bow mount US2 transducer?  (and give up on the si imaging to display on the 1198)

there are only 2 changeable options on the 1198 setup menu:
temperature signal source - (1198/bow or helix12/transom)
advanced 2d sonar source - (1198/bow or helix12/transom)

1. Verify under the Sonar tab (of the 1198) that the Connected Transducer selection is set to Dual Beam (regardless of the 2d source selected under the 2d tab in the networking Menu)  ...

2. CHIRP must be shut off the Helix 12 to share 2d Sonar to a non-CHIRP 1198 (under CHIRP Configuration under the Setup tab)  ...

3. After confirming the 2 items above - verify what options are available under the "Advanced tab" in the networking Menu of the 1198  ...

i have not had a chance to check the settings on the 1198 yet.

question about compatibility between units.
turning off the chirp feature of the helix12, in order to share 2d sonar with the 1198 (non-chirp legacy unit), kind of defeats the purpose of having the new chirp technology in the first place.  if this is a compatibility issue due to the helix being non-backwards compatible with 1198 legacy unit, i can somewhat understand.

would i run into the same compatibility problem if i replaced the 1198 with a current model helix 10 (409960-1, non chirp helix unit, least expensive offering in the h10 series)?
i'd really like to keep the chirp capability of the h12 turned "on", while using the h10 to see side imaging from the transom transducer (during slow forward movement under bow mount trolling motor propulsion).

with my current configuration, my last resort would be to simply give up on trying to get side imaging to the 1198, and just use the US2 bow mount trolling motor transducer.  at least this would (hopefully) eliminate the network connection error message.

CHIRP cannot be shared to a non-CHIRP unit (core numbered series or HELIX gen1 non-CHIRP series).. CHIRP must be shut off where fixed frequency Sonar can then be shared  ... (I agree it's kinda limiting the options one may desire)  ...
-----

The SI/DI should be able to be shared to the 1198  ...

My previous bullet points to check are trying to get each unit set correctly to troubleshoot why the SI/DI is not sharing to the 1198 because it's not clear yet if the issue is a Menu problem or a cabling problem  ...

Once we know the Connected Transducer selection on the 1198 is correct (Dual Beam), and CHIRP on the HELIX 12 is shut off = the Networking tab options should lead us to the issue of why the SI/DI is not sharing to the 1198  ...
