Garmin sidevü - is it any good?
« on: November 05, 2016, 05:27:47 PM »
I have been noticing the cheap SI units that garmin sells. They use chirp and have excellent resolution both in terms of beam width and distance.
However, the images look strange. They are lacking the clear three dimensionality of regular SI images. They are grainy and it's hard to see fish. Bumps in the bottom also look weird.
I'll link to an example at the bottom.
Could these strange effects be due to the chirp technology? I've often noticed a lack in dynamic range in chirp images.
Is somebody using one of these sidevü units?

Discussions in different forums indicate that the Garmin SideVu does indeed have some impressive range in SI ...

But those same discussions also indicate the lack of detail in those same SideVu images ...

So it's not just your observation ...
