Using my Helix 5 SI for ice fishing
« on: January 01, 2016, 04:22:14 PM »
My question is.... I have a Helix 5 SI, can I use the transducer that came with the unit, for hard water fishing, or do I need the HB ice ducer (XI 920), I know the SI will not work hard water fishing and maybe the DI won't work either. Why spend $150-200.00 if not required..... any thoughts......

I've got a 998 and when I first got it I used the HDSI transducer that came with it. I had two concerns right away. One was getting it to hang level once I got it down the hole. The other was a durability issue. Ice fishing isn't easy on equipment and I didn't want to be beating that fancy transducer around. It cost me about 1/3 for the ice ducer vs. what it would cost to replace the HDSI ducer if it got damaged. I don't regret paying the money for the ice ducer.

Thanks Gimp, never thought about it that way, no doubt  your right , the Si ducer is probably about the price of a nice rod/reel combo more than the ice ducer. yup and my luck i'd drop in down the hole , hahaha . I just like to make something I already have work, and not have to buy something else.
So long story short I'm off to buy a Ice Ducer , thanks Gimp......

Along with Gimp's good advice above ...

It is possible to use the stock XNT 9 SI 180 T as an ice xducer ...

Under the Sonar tab cursor down to "Connected Transducer" ... And select "Dual Beam" ...

This will shut off the SI transmitters allowing only the 2d to transmit and receive ...

There is actually no harm in leaving the selection to also transmit the SI piezoes ... It just will not render any SI image that is easily discernible ... Because the echoes will be smears down the SI image as the SI "pings" the same exact water slice repeatedly ...
