What will I be able to see  on the 859 that will come from the 998 and which gps reciever would it be best to use for both units?  The 998 is on the dash, si ducer on the stern and the 859 will be on the bow using the us2 ducer in the terrova.
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

You will be able to share 2d sonar ...

The 859 should use it's own internal GPS antenna at the bow because the US2 sonar will only be a couple feet away from the internal GPS antenna for the best waypoint accuracy ...

The 998 external GPS antenna should be mounted at the stern close to the SI xducer for the best waypoint accuracy ...

Thanks Rickie.
I just downloaded the link you  shared. I don't see the 998ci SI, but hope that it will be the same as the 999, in that my 998 will talk to the 859 and share SI and 2D sonar images?

The primary unit in that chart (across the top) will always be the xx9 series ...

The secondary unit in that chart (down the left side) can be xx8 or xx9 series units ...

xx9 series can share a lot more things with another xx9 series ... (With certain newer software) ...

xx9 series sharing to an xx8 series is limited to "like technology" at this time ...

So ... No the 998 will not share SI and DI with the 859 ... Only 2d ... And then only the 200kHz if the 859 is the DI model with 200kHz/455kHz 2d (XNT 9 DI T) ...

There has been rumor of a software release for the xx8 series units that would allow "cross technology" sharing (like between xx9 series units) ... But that has not happened yet ...

I just got through with a chat with Jennifer at Humminbird, she told me my 998 will indeed talk to the 859.

That is correct from what I have been told.  The transducer compatibility chart on the Humminbird web site does not reflect this though.  The units have to be running newer version software (not sure what version this started with), so latest version is your best bet.

I have the latest 998 software V7.090. I received an email from Humminbird a few weeks ago, telling me there would be another upgrade for the 998 coming in Feb. the update for xx9 units is already available. It has to do with i-pilot link issues I guess. Jennifer didn't know for sure when the the update for the xx8 units would be out.

Well this is good news ...

I need to change some of my notes to reflect this ...

Just remember that the primary unit has to be an XX9 unit and it can use the sonar from the XX8 unit but not always the other way around.

Boy, that just sounds confusing… I hope they get that chart updated soon.

Hmm, now I'm really confused because Jennifer told me that my 998c si, as the primary unit on the dash would talk to the 859 on the bow and that the 859 would receive 2d and si from the 998 on the dash.
I'm going to wait on the purchase of the 859 until I have this totally resolved. :-\

That is correct 6speedy3.
My use of the term “primary unit” was in reference to the chart on the Humminbird web site (which will hopefully get updated soon).

With the 998c Si and 859ci HD unit combination that you have; the 998c Si can use the 2D sonar from the 859ci HD unit and the 859ci HD unit can use the 2D and Si sonar from the 998c Si unit.

Aaah, thanks Greg, Whew!! The 859 will be hooked to the US2 on the Terrova, that I am switching from i-pilot to i-pilot link, 998,859 and terrova all linked together. I misunderstood your use of the word primary. The 998 not being on the chart is why I had the chat with Jennifer. There is a wealth of information on Humminbird's website, looks like a little upgrading is in order though.
