1199 Side Imaging not working

I have a new 1199CI HD SI Combo unit.
I am having difficulty getting the Side Imaging to work.
This is what I get.

There is no right side image.
The transducer I am using is an XHS HDSI 180T.
It is mounted on a pole, that I can position anywhere on the side of the boat, so I have tried it on the left side, right side and the transom. I have also rotated the transducer through 360 degrees in each of the positions. I get the same problem in all positions, so I donít think the boat or engine is causing interference of any kind. I have tested with the engine turned off as well.
I have tried two transducers, and I still get the same problem, which makes me think the issue is with the unit.
Am I using the right transducer?
Do I need 2 transducers in order to get a side image of both sides?
Is there a setting on the unit that I may have wrong?

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums jonshoreman.

I donít think that the left Side Imaging sonar looks correct either.  If you are sure that the Si beams were clear of the boat and its motors, etc. while testing I would look at testing your Si unit on someone elseís boat if at all possible.  It doesnít matter what model Humminbird Si unit it is as the test will work with any of them.  We have seen where low power to the unit can cause sonar failure and you should certainly check all of the electrical connections on your boat to make sure that they are tight and not corroded (donít forget the fuse, fuse holder and battery terminals) but besides that you should call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks about getting the unit in for servicing.

The unit is set up to be portable.
All of the connections are good and solid. There is just a single cable with clamps on to a battery that was fully charged.
I am 100% sure there is no interference from the boat or engine.
I can hold the transducer far away from the boat, pointing away from the boat, and deep in the water as it is on an adjustable pole.

I don't have easy access to another Humminbird Unit, so testing the transducers on another unit, or my unit on their transducers would be difficult.

This is a brand new unit, do I really need to send it in for a service?!?

It does look like you will have to send in both the unit and transducer since we cannot tell where the problem is.

unit was purchased from the USA ( it's not a a available in the UK yet )

Obviously sending the unit back to the USA is a royal pain in the ass, so I thought I would try it out on the water again first.

Switched the unit on today and the side imaging worked ( I think ), this is what I see.



Does that look about right?

After 5 minutes it reverted back to the previous image I posted, i.e. not working.
I switched the unit off, started it upand it started working again, and remained good for the rest of the 10 hour day.

Any thoughts as to why it would suddenly start working?
The set-up was identical to the other day, when it wasn't working, and also it didn't work today for a short period.

No real good ideas here jonshoreman.
Are you using the connector collector parts to hold the cable connectors to the unit?
See if you can determine if this is temperature related in that it only works after the unit warms up (or it is hot outside) or perhaps only the opposite.

I do not know what you mean by "connector collector parts ".

I have a transducer that I connect directly to the back of the unit.
The connection seems to be OK.
It is neither hot nor cold, around 60 F both times I used the unit.

On the Installation Guide it shows the cable connector insert section that details the installation of this.  if you are not using it the transducer may not have been fully plugged in when you were using it the first time.

Now it's starting to make sense!

I am guilty of not reading  the instructions, and I wasn't using the cable collector.

I will install this and try it again on Monday 19th May.

Thanks for the help so far. ( Hoping this solves the problem and I don't have to send the unit back )

Hello,

I have the same issue and I don't want to open new topic so I would like ask you for help continuing this one. My unit is 1197c with XHS 9 HDSI 180T where I already did below investigation:

1. Checked and measurement power connection between Unit-fuse-battery
2. Checked on additional power cabel
3. Checked on additional battery
4. Checked on additional xducer the same model
5. Reset to default setting
6 Upgrade firmware to 6.310

In attachemnt you can find screens from my Unit

It woudl be perfect if we can somehow solve this case remotely because I'm from Poland and it's not so ease to send electronic devices to US :(

Can you export your NAV data to a SD Card and open them in Humminbird PC ...??

Check for corrupt waypoints ... like unusual dates and duplicate waypoints ...

We have seen corrupt waypoints cause weird anomalies before ...(but it's usually in the charting features) ...

The flat rate repair for a 1197 is nearly $700 USD ... On top of the shipping you would have to pay to get it to Eufaula Alabama ... That would most likely be an undesirable option ...

Check your NAV data as I outlined above ... If all seems well with your NAV data in HBPC ... Format your NAV directories under the Setup tab ... Restore Defaults again and test (with no NAV data in the unit memory) ...

Hi Rickie,

Generally I don't use Waypoints so I can dirrectly Format Nav data. Format Nav data option is next or previous to Restore Default in Setup tab am I right?

As far as I know during last few tests where I tried milion of options like in the "labirynt" probably I also formated nav data but I don't remember if the sequence was the same like (format nav data next restore to default)

So I'll check this today evening and let you know

WoW please do not scare me it's a fix price and doesn't matter what was broken? If yes do we have any alternatives?

The NAV data resides in the internal memory of the unit ...

*Insert a blank formatted SD Card into with card slot ...
*Press Menu twice to get into the Main Menu System ...
*Cursor over to the NAV tab ...
*Cursor down to "Waypoints, Routes, Tracks" ...
*Cursor right to open Waypoint Management ...
*Cursor to highlight "Options" ...
*Cursor right to open options menu ...
*Cursor to "Select All and..." ..
*Cursor right to open select menu ...
*Cursor to "Export" ...
*Cursor right to command the Export ...
*Cursor to confirm in the green popup box ...
*Wait for "Export Successful" in white popup ...
*Remove SD Card ...

This copies the NAV data to the SD Card ...

Then open Humminbird PC on your computer and insert the SD Card in your pc's SD Card reader ...

An image of a SD Card should popup in HBPC ...

Click the arrow under the SD Card icon for moving the NAV data from the SD Card into HBPC ...

Inspect dates of NAV data for erroneous possible dates (especially dates older than your unit) ...
Inspect coordinates for erroneous NAV data (Lat and Lon in other parts of the world) ...

Now that your NAV data is safely backed up in HBPC ... :

*Press Menu twice to get into the Main Menu System ...
*Cursor over to the Setup tab ...
*Cursor down to "Format NAV Directories" ...
*Cursor right to activate the command ...

Then Restore Defaults and test ...

I checked your recommendation rgarding NAV data and as I mentioned the database is empty :( so the reason shoudl be someware else

Any other ideas?

Hi Rickie,

My orginal version was 4.070 later on on I changed to 6.640 which is available on Humminbird\My equipment, now I'm on 6.310 and situation is still the same.

Regrading NAV data Waypoints/Tracks etc. after exporting to SD it's a clear data as I formated nav data many times.

I feel that something is wrong with motherboard on my unit, so then maybe idea is to replace it from any other borken 1197c unit.

Maybe you know anyone who has 1197c with broken screen? I'm able to buy and replace motherbord by my self or where will be the best place to put such post about buying broken 1197c unit?

I have checked with my distributor and they propose me new 1197c unit from HB for $950 + $100-200 shipping costs - ridiculous also they told me that there is no option to repair only replacement is possible :)

I assume guys toss them out when they become too old to have to pay those repair rates ...
 
You could put an ad in the Classifieds asking and see what may turn up ...

You mentioned I think you already tested on another xducer ...

The only other option I can think of is to test your head unit on someone else's boat to eliminate all variables of your boat and electronics Setup in your boat ...
