Canoe Mounting Bracket vs Trolling motor mount TM-Csi.
« on: March 20, 2014, 08:34:32 PM »
Purchased the 798 as a birthday present to myself so don't tell my wife.
I have a Radisson Canoe with a 55lb thrust Minnkota TM. My plan is to buy the Shield & Saver TM-Csi for the trolling motor. But...I'm the McGiver type and wondering if a separate transducer mount would give me better images?
Any Thoughts,
John

Some things you MacGyver, some you don't. If it's me in this situation, and it was last week, I'm on the phone with Transducer S&S.
They saved me some pain and suffering. The image on MK's website of the 55# bow mount is wrong. They are aware of it and sent
me the correct unit. Great people to deal with.

I think he is really asking whether to trolling motor or canoe (fixed) mount it, right John?
For me I would trolling motor mount it but then I understand what the Si sonar is showing me a little more than most people do.  I know that when I turn the trolling motor that I am aiming the Si sonar beams in a different direction and how it will affect the Si sonar readout.  It’s great for using it as a spotlight to look under docks, trying to spot stumps on a drop-off in front of you or finding that school of fish you were just over.  But for some who are new to Si sonar it is confusing and so I would recommend a fixed mount if this is your first Si sonar unit.

You are correct. I locked onto the TM part of the post and the MacGyver part and had visions of some of the unique TM mounting
creations we have seen in the past. I have had my own "well this looks good on the drawing board" experiences that have
    gone South quickly.

You might consider one of these   http://www.fishingspecialties.com/fishspec_main_002.htm
I don't have one, but others have reported good success.....and reasonable price.

This is on my list of mounts to consider if I get a 360.

Greg that's exactly what I was looking for.  I do want to be able to search docks and structure like you explained and I'm sure their will be a learning curve. I didn't even think about tracking baitfish after finding them. I will be ordering the TM-Csi. I have the unit set-up portable and have been home adjusting and playing with the settings to get more comfortable with the unit. Is there anything I should adjust or any specific settings that make images better with a TM mount? More specifically anything with TM interference?

I will also be ordering a 5billion BTU blast heater to melt this New England ice before June.

I would consider the XTM-9-Si-180-T transducer instead of using the transom mounted one with the TS& S bracket.  The reason for this is that the XTM version has added shielding in case you have trolling motor interference.  No way to know if you will have it or not without first mounting it.  You can exchange your XNT-9-Si-180-T transducer for it (if it is still new in the packaging) through the Humminbird Transducer exchange program:

Slow the Chart Speed down is about all for settings.

I've always had my TD on a TM mount. Like explained elsewhere, every little move of the TM would "smudge" up the SI. I recently purchased an 1199 and a bow mount 360. I plan to "mcgiver" either a bow mount, or side mount, for both TDers, . This is going on my canoe....yes it is over kill but it's what I've got!! After I give that arrangement a season or two, I think I'll know which works best for me, either TM, bow, or side mounts. Suggestions are invaluable, but I'm all in favor of trying everything and seeing what works for YOU!! We all have such vastly different circumstances, equipment, waters, etc. I doubt there could ever be a, one setup fits all.  Please share the setup you chose, and please share what you liked/disliked about it!!
Thanks!!

Ed
