797c2si Resetting Menu items No hands
« on: May 22, 2013, 01:25:02 PM »
My 797c2si recently changed four menu settings while on a fishing trip without my touching the unit.  It changed user mode from advanced to normal, water from salt to fresh, transducer to a different type that the one on the boat and time from eastern to central.  I'm absolutely sure this is what happened.  Question is:  Could this be due to voltage fluctuation when starting the engine?
About two weeks ago it decided it couldn't read the depth in the local bay correctly,  I coud see the bottom in five or six feet of water and it was reading from 40 to 100 feet.  I finally reset to factory defaults and then went through all of the menu items and reset them to my preferences.  When I was out in the gulf last Sunday my Side imaging was working fine, then without any help from me none of the side imaging views was available.  When I checked the menu items it had changed transducer type to one that does not support side imaging.  I have been having some voltage fluctuation problems lately and wonder if that would have caused these problems.  I now have everything set correctly and it seems to be working fine.

I think if the unit is not shutdown properly, then it may not save
your current settings.
If the voltage reduction was enough, the unit may have rebooted,
I guess it's possible.
Hooking your sonar to it's own dedicated battery will solve these types of
issues and also interference issues.
The sonar battery does not have to be large.

I would also check your battery and fuse connections, and
the fuse itself.

I found someone with a similar problem in another post.  They were having problems retaining settings and found that they were shutting the unit off with an accessory switch instead of the on/off button.  I've done the same thing a number of times, but no more.
