view on di and si
« on: May 06, 2013, 09:49:19 AM »
I just bought a boat that has a 798 on it I really like the unit my question is it possible that the last owner did not put the right transducer on the boat.  I look at the views from other post on here and other places and my side scan does not seem to pick up images as well as other units. I have tried sensitively set at 9 to 12 or 14 and nothing really changes. I do not seem to pick up structure or fish like others do.  This is the first unit I ever owned with these features and everyone I know has Lowrance and they all hate by unit because you just do not see as much on mine as theirs. If I  had someone with a humminbird to turn to I would meet with them to have them show me more about my unit. I put the unit in simulator mode and make all the adjustments I want and it perfect on land put it in water and it does not show much.  I like to fish shallow water for catfish this time of the year and SI is almost a must and at this point I about ready to buy an Lowrance unit but hate to be out that kind of money when I have this unit already..Thanks for any help

Sorry to hear about the issues.  Not sure about the transducer but what I would do is capture some screenshots of your SI/DI screens.  Maybe with some things on the bottom which you think should have better resolution.  I'm sure after taking a look there are many people here which could diagnose them and give you suggestions on how to tweak your settings.

Here is good info on basic settings...

One of the most important of these is "Chart Speed" ...set to match boat speed...

And I agree with 4d....post some screenshots so we can see what you are seeing...

The other thing to be aware of is that 798 does not come standard with the same transducer as the 898,998, and 1198.

Some have upgraded the 798 to the HDSI transducer and reported improved image definition.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**
