898 mounting
« on: March 14, 2013, 11:31:31 PM »
Hello to the forum.  I'm the latest noob.  I am new to Humminbird and new to fish finders.  Between budget and my wish list I have basically chosen the 898c HD SI as my first FF.  I fish freshwater with some local small lakes and will also be fishing lake Erie and hope to go a bit farther west to Minnesota and Wisconsin.

I see a lot of questions about mounting locations so I thought I'd join the club.  I have not yet purchased the finder.  I have the Lund Crossover 1875 which has a swimming ladder on the starboard side so I'll be locating the transducer on the port side.  95" beam and a 150 Optimax on it.

This is the best photo I have right now.  I never took any of my own of the transom/aft.  I can get out and do it in the next few days if it helps to have a close up.

Nice boat. Here's a link to pictures. Third row, second from left is swim ladder.

   http://www.google.com/search?q=Lund+Crossover+1875&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=1ZpCUc3COtXl4AOztYHIDw&ved=0CDcQsAQ&biw=1416&bih=885

I'm thinking the ladder will be a non issue as it is above the line of site when not deployed.
Have you ask the dealer if they have had experience installing ( not if they can install ) the transducer?
Even if you want to install yourself, they may give you some advice.

Also, do you want to try and use the standard HDSi transducer for both 2D readings at high boat speeds as well as Si/Di sonar?  I ask because this may be a more difficult boat to be able to do this without also placing the HDSi transducer in more danger of being damaged.  Many use a second (cheaper) transducer for the 2D sonar so that they can protect the more expensive ($250+ to replace) HDSi transducer.

Mike, the port side was in mind because I can see my kids kicking the transducer while the ladder is down.  I"ll have to look at it this weekend and see if that's really a risk.

Greg, I am new to this so I didn't realize I could wire two transducers into the 898.  Where should the SI TD be located for the best protection?

I will probably have my dealer install it but I want to make sure I am educated on these things before I talk to them.

Chris,
I would need a picture of your boat transom to be able to suggest a location.

With the two transducer combination you have more options on where to install the HDSi transducer.  Your dealer should be able to suggest the best place for the 2D transducer.  I would get it working first and then mount the HDSi transducer afterwards as you would want it as far away from the 2D transducer as you can get it (while still allowing the Si sonar to work), so that the 2D transducer does not block as much of the Si sonar signal.

For your aluminum boat you would need the XNT-9-20 transducer and the AS-Si-DB-Y cable.  An option would be the XSO-9-20-T Stick-On transducer but not many use it.

I will snap a nice pic today or tomorrow whenever I can break away and take a look at it.  I'll do one with the swim ladder down too.  I think it's relatively easy to move the swim ladder to port if for some reason it's technically better to have the transducer starboard.

I think starboard mounting is more popular mainly because most outboard motor controls/fuel lines are routed that side and gives a convenient exit for the ducer cable.

I dont see anything wrong with the port side.  Like you said, with the swim ladder there on the starboard side, its a higher chance of someone knocking it around.

Can you guys expand upon why I should use two transducers?  Sorry but I have not been on the forum long and haven't absorbed much wisdom :)  If I use two to keep the SI one safe, what is the safest location for it?

Many use a second transducer for one or both of these reasons: to protect the more expensive Si transducer or to get better high-speed water depth readings (mainly on fiberglass boats).

Mounting the Si transducer above the bottom edge of the transom makes it less likely to get hit by floating debris or stumps, rocks, etc.

As I stated above; if you want to use a two transducer system I would mount and get the 2D transducer working first and then install the Si transducer in relation to the 2D transducer.  Move the ladder if you have to keep the Si transducer safe.

GumbyGold,

I have a similar boat (1800 Tyee) and I'm going to mount the SI transducer almost right in front of the motor (a little to side of) near the centerline of the boat and the cheaper 2D transducers, as Greg suggested, in the space between the bunk and the centerline of the boat conventrionally.

I am using a HDPE (high density polyethelyne) transom plate to avoid drilling multiple holes in the boat.

There is another recent post/topic on this with some pictures that might help you out a little.

I am pretty new to the forum too but these guys provide awesome information and I am feeling smarter and smarter every day - lol.
