fishing shallow water
« on: October 07, 2012, 10:50:35 AM »
After locating fish, it seem best to turn my unit off to reduce noise.
Has anyone else found this to be true?  thanks for help - Fay

I would think that once you have the fish located in a known position ( marker, line of sight, shoreline, docks, etc. ),
you would have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I've talked to BASS and Walleye tour pros that do this, but don't advertise the fact.

Mike, I have been told that brand "L" units now have a way to turn the transducer "off"
while leaving the GPS "on".   Not a bad idea.   Fay

Brand "L" has had that feature for years on most units. I agree that it would be nice to turn off sonar and not affect GPS...

I am not up to date on "L" 's features. The day I found out that "L" let Linda Colt go, all my "L" units went up for sale.
It's been HB ever since and I don't regret a minute of it.

This may vary with different scenarios around the world, but have always found the best fishing to be directly under the transducer, you can view fish swimming up to the transducer and back down again.

I have been doing this for years. You can turn the sonar off on HB and gps stays on. hit power button for a second and then the first choice is to turn sonar on or off, also can be done form setup menu. Note the on or off displayed is the current status, so if it says on the use 4 way pad to turn off and vis-versa

Mike, exactly.  Linda and Luke Morris were driving folks and highly supported our efforts. We do not use much of the "L" now except for GPS. Our sonar is divided between the HB and the MST. It just depends on the area we are working..

I finally thought to try it Jim Jack.  So easy and in front of me all the time.  Thanks, tight lines - Fay

Fay:
There have been several debates whether fish can hear/feel
the sonar pings.
I for one think they can.
Some people don't think so.

I would think that Lowrance would have fixed their customer
support issues by now.  They would have to if they want to
stay in business.

There are some great clips on U-tube under jigging for flounder and the sonar pings are very noticeable.
Fish can hear because baits that rattle will outcatch those that don't.
When I was looking at both HB and L for a new unit last year, everyone I talked with complained about
the poor customer support from L.  I just hope people like Greg are compensated for all the time they
put in to help new HB owners.  If he moves to L.; I may move as well.   ;D  later - Fay
