Bow/Trolling Motor Installation
« on: October 20, 2009, 03:50:46 PM »
I've had my 997 for 1 season so far and I love it. My problem is that it is installed at the helm and not up at the bow of the boat where I fish. I am a bass and crappie fisherman and the setup is on my bass boat (Skeeter ZX190). I am toying with the idea of buying another ram mount base and SI transducer for the bow. I have a 787c2i at the bow already, but this would be setup next to it off the ram mount. Has anyone done this yet? How do you mount the SI tranducer? I would assume you mount it on the trolling motor, but would also assume that turning the trolling motor would skew the image.

I probably won't do anything until next season, but I'm curious if anyone has done this. My thought is, when I run out in the morning, or I'm going to go "searchin" I'll leave it at the helm. But when I'm going to fish an area for an extend period of time (like when I'm crappie fishing) I can leave it at the bow where I can see it and use it.

Thanks for the input,

Cameron

I have tried an SI transducer on the Trolling Motor and removed after a month and replaced it with a QuadraBeam Transducer (this works better for me).  To use the SI Transducer effectively you need to keep a constant course and speed otherwise what you are seeing is deformed everytime you change direction with the trolling motor.

I figured that was the issue. So if I put a switch on my current transducer and run the second wire up to the bow that would take care of the transducer. I have an interlink on the GPS, so witch splitter cable would allow me to run the GPS to the bow as well?

Bottom line is I'd like to have my 997 at the bow OR at the helm.

Thanks,

Cameron,
The SysLink will allow you to use the 997’s GPS Receiver on the console or on the bow.

I would not right off Si on the trolling motor too fast.  If you are not a member I would join the UnOfficial Humminbird Side Imaging Group web site:

Doug Vahrenburg is a big proponent of Si on the trolling motor and has posted about it many times.  He even set up a photo folder with images from trolling motor mounted Si transducers.  It may not work for everyone but he sure makes it work for his style of fishing.  I’ve also convinced my Wife’s Cousin who fishes the Crappie tournaments to install Si on the trolling motor and he likes it.

Greg,

Thank you for that info. After my last post I came across his info on trolling motor mounted SI. I am going to continue to look into that, but the cost is going to prevent me from doing it this year. Probably first thing next season. I live in Missouri and have a Skeeter, so Doug and I keep crossing paths.

Thanks for your help, both here and the Unoffical site.

Greg is right there are probably a lot of folks that keep a steady course with a constant speed.  Although most of the time my trolling motor is on a constant speed it is usually too slow and I am continuously changing course.  Under these conditions everything is distorted and not much value, the QuadraBeam is better suited for the way I operate my trolling motor.

I still have my TM SI transducer and will try it again when I get a larger boat.
