1197c with 6.180 update - a few problems
« on: April 04, 2012, 08:14:08 AM »
I updated to 6.180 a few weeks ago, but then I just went through my menu items,
and set my preferences, and that was it.

I haven't been on the water yet.
In getting ready to go out this weekend, I've taken a closer look.

I noticed that my sirius XM weather won't update.
The system seems to recognize the module, but the signal strength is not strong enough for it
to work in the garage.
I never had this problem before.  Previously, I could get a good signal in the garage.

Also,
The unit seems very sluggish to change screens.
Also, if you press an arrow multiple times, it's like the unit puts it in a buffer and
then executes it slowly.  It' not like real time.
So, I can press an arrow key down 5 times, then sit back and watch it
go down through the menu items at a slow pace.

I'll report again after I have taken it out on the water.

ITG, I will check mone for what you are doing also..
The only thing I noticed right off the bat was the left/right key to change contour to on/off did not work right.

I will check the things you were doing except for the radio feature..

Chuck,
Is that contour setting on the SI menu?
If not, tell me what menu you are selecting it from and
I'll check my unit tonight.

Chuck.
I tried it and it works.
If it's off, push the right arrow for on.
If it's on, push the left arrow for off.

OK, thanks.  right after the update the right and left key would do nothing.  I used the unit several more times on the search last weekend.
It is working right now.
When it was not right I had to use the selection above contour to get the contour to work.

Oh well maybe it needed time to figure out what it was supposed to do.
Thanks again for checking..

When I did the update back a week after it came out...my unit worked great.  But then it seemed the more I used the unit with the new updated software...things started to change,.......my unit would cut off and yes, both my XM WEather AND Weather Sense would not work at all.  Just like your had a tough time loading.  I then called XM...had them resend the signal to the unit....traced down wireds and then decided to change my oversize type watch battery in the Weather Sense.  Everything started to work again but then decided until everything was fixed...I switched back to the old program.

Well guys, I used to be a staunch advocate for updating to the
newest version of software.
Not anymore.
If your unit is working Ok, I recommend leaving it alone.
I'm pretty pissed right now.

I went fishing this morning and my XM weather keeps telling me that
the data is old.  5 minutes old, 55 minutes old, etc.
It hasn't worked right since I did the update.

I have refreshed my signal on the XM website and the system does
recognise the XM receiver.  There is something in the software that
is not working right.

I don't know why the f@ck that Humminbird bothers to put out these freaking
piece of sh@t updates when they don't even test them with all of the accessories.

Now I'm going back to a prior release, and I ain't NEVER going to do another
software update on my 1197 again.  Once everything works, I'm going to leave
it alone.  These updates make you waste a lot of time.
Are we the Humminbird guinnea pigs?

ITG....yep buddy I feel your pain.  I am hard pressed to do any update until a bunch of guinnae pigs have tried it out. ::)

It used to be that updates were pretty solid but as of recent it seems that more problems are put out in new code than fixes. :(

dont known the testing process but something in quality is lacking..  >:(

ITG/Sonar2000, You could not pay me to update to the 6.180 seams to have a few bugs in the code. Maybe HB should have a QC section test and field test update before release to the unsuspecting user!

There are probably some test but not sure how deep or functional.

Maybe more tests in operational items like waypoint and navigation.
This could be done by a vehicle and not have to go on a boat or water.

And for interconnect/interlink and now especially ethernet.

I think the sonar part is doing well..

I think there are just too many new features coming out, too fast
for Humminbird to test them thoroughly.

They should NEVER put out an update until it is thoroughly tested.

When you think about out, when the 1197 was first built,
they knew what they wanted to do with it.
Then, they added downimaging and a bunch of new features.
The problem is, that every new feature is going to use
memory and it's one more thing for the system to keep track of.

I'm in the process right now of researching older updates.
I'm going to choose one, test it, and if it works OK, that's
where I'm going to stay.

I noticed when I went back to 5.5, I had an error message
'out of memory' when I tried to load in 135 waypoints.
So, I won't be using 5.5, that's for sure.

Your Humminbird unit release should be matched with its corresponding HumminbirdPC release.

I'm betting if you use release 5.5 on your unit AND use HumminbirdPC 4.1.1, then you will not get the "out of memory" nastygram.

And I think this Humminbird nastygram is a false error, I've always had all my waypoints and tracks loaded.
I have ~300-600 waypoints and 20-30 tracks at different times.

I noticed this error when my HumminbirdPC was WMS-compatiable and my 1197/998 were pre-WMS levels.

I'm now running HumminbirdPC 4.2.0, 1197(6.180) and 998(6.180) and now do not get this "out of memory" message.  I got it all the time with HumminbirdPC(4.1.8, 4.2.0) with 1197(5.500) and 998(5.700).

So HumminbirdPC might have a litte backward compatablity bug.

All this is IMO.
