Best Transducer for most coverage using 2-d on my 1197
« on: September 21, 2011, 08:46:48 AM »
Hey folks.
I've come to the conclusion, that although very neat, I don't have much use
for Side Imaging or Down Imaging.
I do however like the big-@ss screen. :)
I do mostly trolling and I use the 2-d sonar most of the time.
I like the fish symbols with the depths on them.

I would like to know what transducer out there would give me the greatest
2-d coverage.

I've been reading about the airmar P48W transducer.
The questions are:
Is this thing fully compatible with all of the 1197 functions?
Fish symbols, max depth, color palletes?

Anybody have any information at all?
Thanks in advance.

ITG,
I am not familiar with the Airmar P48W at all but I do know that the functions that you named are all within the unit and are controlled by the software.  All the transducer does is produce the data that gets translated by the unit’s software.  If this transducer ends up returning more or less of a signal than the standard 2D sonar in the 1197 does than that will affect what colors are being shown for the same targets versus the standard Humminbird DualBeam sonar and would affect the size fish symbols used for a particular fish and the systems maximum depth capabilities as well.

I am with you on 2D, most of the time (fishing lakes) I use 2D and when on the hunt I split the screen with LakeMaster's map program.

It helps me to find underwater islands.  Sometimes I use a split screen with down imaging on a second pass looking for bushes.  Seldom do I use SI, but on occasion it does help to understand the bottom.

LakeMaster is especially good because Lake Eufaula fluctuates 10 feet annually and moves significantly up and down monthly.  Other then trees it is mostly rock and stones with lots of drop offs.

The 1197 is a great tool and I really appreciate it.
