Topic: 997c and 787c2I on same boat??

I would like to know if i am able to mount a 997c and a 787c2I both on the same boat with out interference?i have a 18ft tracker Targa i am putting the 997 on the bow and the 787 on the dash.also can i mount one of the transducers on the port and one on the starboard side to get rid of interference or will the cones meet regardless of distance.also i don't want to mount on the trolling motor seeing that i am usually in rough water and it pops in and out of the water.I am not set in where to mount each unit so  bow or dash doesn't matter but the more i think about it the 997 should go on the dash.any thoughts would be great ...thanks

With two sonar units on the same boat there is always the possibility of getting sonar-to-sonar interference.  If you do get this; try turning on and up the Noise Filter menu on the unit that is showing the interference.  If that does not help enough than try setting the Lower Range menu to a manual setting that is different than the other unit.

how far apart should i mount the transducers from each other?and can they both go on the same side?is there a optimal setting i should have these set at.last year when i had these set up, the port side of the 997 was not coming in clear more black than anything,i thought becase the motor was in the way.but sense then i took them off to sell the boat but decided to keep the boat and reinstall them the right way.

Mount the transducers as far away from each other as you can get them.  The farther away from each other the better.  Note that the 787c2i’s can use an inside-the-hull transducer.  This may not get them any farther apart but it would keep it from blocking any of the Si sonar from the 997’s transducer.

when u say mount them as far away as i can,can i put one on the port side and one on the starboard side? and if not how close can i get to the motor?also should the 997 be on the outside or vise versa?and is there a transducer i can put in the boat for aluminum?i thought only fiberglass.

Mounting one transducer on the port and one on the starboard side will be as far away as you can mount them on a boat.

You can install the transducer as close to the motor as you can as long as it does not interfere with the operation of the motor (turning, cooling water intake or water flow through the propeller).

Not sure what you mean by “should the 997 being on the outside or vice versa”.

A company called Radarsonics Inc. makes a transducer called the AlumaDucer that was designed for use as an inside-the-hull transducer for aluminum boats:

I have never used one and have heard mixed results from those who have.  It still has to be located in a location that does not have air bubbles flowing across the hull.

(Not sure what you mean by “should the 997 being on the outside or vice verse)sorry what i meant was if i mount both on the right side of the motor should the 997 be the furthest from the motor and the 787 between the motor and the 997.so if you where looking at the boat from the back it would be motor,787 and then the 997 the furthest from center of boat(motor)

I understand Akita1.  I don’t know that it will make any difference whether the 997’s transducer is inside or outside of the 787’s transducer as you will either get blockage only on one side (the left of you mount the 997 transducer on the outside starboard side of the boat) or possibly both (the right side from the 787’s transducer and possibly on the left side by the motor).  If you are going to use the 787 for high speed water depth readings than I suppose its transducer would be better on the inside position nearer the motor so that it would be deeper in the water, so the 997’s transducer would go to the outside.

OK i put both on and took it for a test run yesterday,the 787 is closest to the motor.when on plane the 787 will read depth but not the 997,i put the 997 on the dash and the 7 on the bow.when both are on i get non stop fish marking,even with a lower setting.for the 9 i figured its coming out of the water well on plane,but not sure about the non stop fish marking(i know there are not that many fish down there)also they are set at 200khz(997) and  80khz (787).sorry to be a pain

You are not being a pain Akita1 but you are seeing sonar cross talk.  Try setting the Noise Filter to a higher setting (or turn it on) and see if that gets rid of the repeating fish.

Akita1, I have these 2 units installed on my 19' Skeeter and have no problems. However, why not trade in the transducer from the 787c2i and get a trolling motor mounted transducer? If the 787 is on the bow, you would want the transducer there too as the 787 has an internal GPS unit. Always try to get your GPS and transducer as close together as possible. My 997 and 787 are connected with the interlink box, which is really handy when you roll over that deep brush pile and want to mark it and find it later.
