How to obtain depths from records on SD card
« on: March 10, 2011, 06:57:31 AM »
Hello
I own a HB 797C2 and I would like to use it for making bathymetries on some lakes in my zone.
Is there any other way to extract depths and positions from the recorded files on the sd card than play them back and log the NMEA strings?
Any software to accomplish this task?
Thanks in advance
Have a nice day
Pietro

I use SIView to accomplish this.  You will need to convert the recordings to .xtf files first, using HB's sontoxtf program.

Once you open the file in SIView, you just export the track.  You have a choice of text file or gpx file formats.  I recommend you do both, as the gpx file can be re-uploaded to your HB as a track, which will show you where you have already been.  For the depth data, just edit the exported file as you wish - I use Excel to reformat to suit my mapping program.

Keep your recordings under 1 hour, otherwise you will begin to run into memory issues on your PC.

Pietro,

Check out Dr. Depth.  It is truly an all in one solution.

Just got a 598 ci HD SI and the Owner's Manual (yes, I printed and read every word) says that if you don't download your tracks to the SD card BEFORE powering down the unit, you will loose all the depth data. Trust me, been there, done that. Fortunately it was on the maiden voyage and only lost 2 hours of tracks.
