455 vs 800
« on: January 07, 2011, 10:35:03 PM »
Can someone explain the difference in the 455 and 800 when side imaging. I'm just not sure which one to use and what the differences are.

Howdy drewsloan and welcome to the forum!

In a nutshell:
The 455 kHz will give you more range, the 800 kHz will show you more details.

I had a similar question two years ago when I started out with my 981. Robert gave me a more detailed answer here:

Hope this helps!

Drewsloan,

Welcome to the forum.

The verticle beam angle on the 800khz is also smaller so you will not see as much near the surface as you would with 455khz.  Also this cuts down the distance you can see with 800khz when in shallow water.  Typically about 3 to 4 times the depth.  So in 10' of water you would be able to get up to 40' with 800khz.

You will also notice the signal returns for 455khz are going to be much stronger than the 800khz.

I would suggest making some recordings of the same objects or area and come home and play them back to see any differences in coverage, clarity or signal return.  You can also mess around with the different settings to see what works best with each one.

Good Luck,

Robert
