Hi guys , new to the forum,   i am trying to set up a conection between my laptop and my 898 unit in order to be able to view in realtime the images upon my laptop on another part of the boat,    i have connected the vc1 cable to the back and i have the VGA adapter pluged in to the laptop one side of the adapter is vga and the other is rca (red/ whie / yellow). I have connected the cable(vc1) into the back of the SI 898 unit and have coneted the RCA ends to the adapter (white(audio)) and (red(video)) to each other.  i thought it was as simple as turning on the laptop and viewing exactly what i was seeing on the SI unit screen but "No".....

Am i missing a setting somewhere or is there some monitor option needing turned on either on unit ((Video Outor set to pal)Euro Unit)  or is it a laptop seeting via windows on laptop, to allow it to become a monitor only, that i am missing.....  using Windows 7....thanks scot

On my 1197, there is a software option to turn on/off the Video output.
I think it defaults to off.
I couldn't tell you off-hand exactly where to find it on the menus.
Probably under the System menu.
Good luck.

95% of the time the VGA port on laptops are outgoing only.  All you need is a cheap computer monitor with composite RCA ports to view the output from the HB.  To view on the laptop and capture video you will need a video capture device.  Search for them on www.newegg.com.  There are a bunch of USB devices that would do the job.

Usually on the laptop, you will have to have some type of video-in and will have software to show the video on the monitor.

You may be able to hook directly to a stand-alone VGA monitor with the adapter you have.

Video Out - Has anyone used it?
« Reply #4 on: July 21, 2010, 02:46:38 PM »
Hey All,

I put a 898c SI on my boat this past spring, it was my first exposure to side imaging and I am enjoying learning to use it and the fish it has helped me locate. I am curious as to the video output feature of the unit though.

First does anyone know what resolution this outputs? Standard 648x480, the same resolution of the unit itself, or something else?

Has anyone actually hooked their unit up to a LCD TV or Monitor w/ Composite inputs either just to test, or actually on your boat? I like the unit but I'm really jonesin for more screen space - weighing the cost of adding a marine/waterproof 12v LCD in the 13-19" size versus upgrading to the 11" version.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

For training we output our recordings to a 52 inch screen. display is fine but not optimal. We get better image with playback from external viewer program and overhead projector.
I would guess that for on water useing a laptop (toughBook or such) might be better.

Echoing what sonar2000 said, the video output is at the screen resolution only.

The problem you will have with an external display outdoors is screen brightness and contrast.  Unless you buy a marine-rated unit for more than you paid for the sonar.......

You are much better off buying a larger LCD monitor for at home use with recordings, because the external viewers like SIView and Humview show the full resolution of the acquired sonar data.

The only exception to the above would be in S&R operations, where it would be useful to have a second pair of eyes dedicated to interpreting the SI returns, allowing the boat operator more freedom.

That is the first important step in locating or identifying a target. The boat operator and the sonar operator have to be two people. And for safety reasons also. Sonar interpretation is intense unless the object is the only thing on the bottom. And we dont want the boat driver to run into something because he is watching the sonar screen.

On most of our sonar runs we have a unit for the boat driver ans that is for navigation and overlaping paths. The sonar operator has his own unit. (for sonar)

Good post.
Thanks, chuck

By the chance have you tried to set NTSC as the format.  On the domestic models we only have NTSC.

On the monitor have you set the input for RCA. Of course this would be dependent on the type of monitor.

ok,,  turns out that i canot use a monitor ithe the Vga input as the signals that come from the phono( RCA yellow and white) are sent via a diifferent format....   i decided in the end to just buy a 19" lcd flatscreen for it....the images arnt as crisp as the 898 screen by a long way, but a little fiddeling an tv settings and change of colour and its now roughly the same as i was getting on the HB screen except BIGGER,,,,,,what a difference

I wonder if it works in 3d on a 50"samsung led screen.
Then you even walk into a found object.

Don't know if this thread is still live, but was wondering how the LCD monitor worked out for MUB996.

I was thinking this might be a good option to get bigger screen size, but am concerned about how viewable the monitor would be in bright sunlight and if there might be a problem with durability.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

I too would like to know the answer.  I have an 898cSI unit and would like to have a monitor that I could use in the boat in real time.  I am interested in fishing and search and recovery operations.
