Should I buy the 898 SI or the 997 SI for a first timer?
« on: July 06, 2010, 07:53:17 PM »
I am looking at buying my first fish finder and am having trouble deciding on the brand new 898 model or the older but still brand new 997 for side imaging.

I have been told the bigger screen is definitely more advantageous, and that the 997 has more power than the 898.  Is the newer model better than last years model.  The sale price is only $100 more for the 997 than the 898.

I want to find catfish and structure in the Mississippi river, with a little bit of use in some missouri lakes.

I decided on the 898.  The 997 has a one inch wider screen or 1/2 inch on either side.  The 898 has a much faster processor.  I chose the newer technology instead of the wider screen.  Others may have a different opinion.  So far, I have have been extremely happy with my 898.   ;D

I would be looking at the 998, but again its all about the most bang for your buck.  You have to set a budget, and if the unit falls into your budget (or close to it as long as the wife doesn't find out) then go for it.

If the 998 is out your budget, then the 898 is the better option.  Faster processor, video out, and newer technology!

Also, talking about price, most of the internet retailers will come off their advertised price if you call them direct.  J and H Products is very good along with Three Rivers Marine.

Good Luck,

What does "video Out" do for you?

Can this be hooked to a laptop for more resolution?

Video out can be hooked into a laptop....but for most it is used to attach to a tv or a monitor. All this does is make the picture larger.  The tv resolution will determine the clarity of the screen.
