barnacles on transducer?
« on: June 24, 2010, 10:29:29 AM »
I leave my boat in salt water for 4-5 days sometimes. In the summer barnacles will begin to form on the boat bottom but can be easily brushed off while still wet. Longer periods of time and they will seriously attach.

Just wondering if anyone has a problem with them attaching to the transducer and what if anything can be used to protect against this. I would think bottom paint is out but how about a coat of wax or some other protection?

With my old HB transducer (really old) I just scraped gently with a fingernail to remove, but don't want to screw up the new one. ( 798cisi )

Anyone have a history with this or any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ted

Ted,

I remember someone putting a ziplock bag over it with and a rubber band when they had extended period in the water.  I have had barnacles on mine and it was not easy to get them out of the small crevices!

The paint usually has copper in it if I am not mistaken.  Not sure how this would affect the signal, but I think the bag is a much better idea!

Let us know what you do and how it works out.  Post any picts if you can.

Good Luck,

Robert

Thanks for the reply.  I may try the plastic bag idea. Sounds like it should work.
