998c SI or other unit?
« on: May 06, 2010, 03:22:20 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am looking for general knowledge on why I should or shouldn't go either larger or smaller when compared to a 998c SI.

A few of the questions I have had are pretty simple, and I was able to find them out on my own...

Here is what I was thinking you all please tell me what you think...

I am looking at a 998c SI at the driver console on a RAM mount so I can see it up front as $$$ is an issue and eventually I will have a smaller unit up front on the deck.

With all that said whichever unit I get I would be adding:

MSD 632 Plat + maps for central Florida south lakes as well as MSD HMPT-S6 Plat + hotmaps for the Southern portion of the U.S

I was told this was the smarter choices because I only fish Lakes in these areas and the NVB bundle doesnt provide the overhead imaging.

My worries are these:

1) I would use both slots for the maps
2) Would I be able to get screen captures at all?
3) How many way points or markers for navigation would I have remaining?
If I get those maps the only thing I will be able to utilize between the units is the waypoints, correct?

Lastly, what kind of advantages would I see if I went with the optional Quadra-beam transducer?

Sorry for writing a book on my second post, but I want to ensure I am getting the right unit for me and the spots I fish most.

I bought a 998 about a month ago.  I absolutely love the sonar.  Base maps suck and processor speed could be improved but the side imaging is awesome.  I'm sure the 1197 is even better with the larger screen but for the price difference I'm not sure it's worth it.  You won't be disappointed with the 998.

Mike,
2) With a mapping card in each slot of the 998 unit there would be no location for the SD (or SDHC) card that is needed for saving the Screen Snapshot to.  The Screen Snapshots and Sonar Recordings are saved to an SD card while the waypoints, tracks and routes are all saved on the unit’s internal memory.

3) Same number of waypoints available (should be in your manual as I can’t remember what they are at the moment…).

The only information shared between the two units when InterLinked would be Waypoints and Routes (if the second unit can use routes) as well as GPS data if you set it up that way.

About the only thing you might gain is being able to look at 2D sonar data over a wider area while at higher boat speeds – this is saying that you can mount the QuadraBeam transducer in a location that will allow for high-speed depth readings.  You will need to change the Transducer Select menu when ever you change from the HDSi transducer to the QuadraBeam and back again.

The map cards need to give room for recordings. If the map taked 2 gb then put it on a 8 gb card and leave room to put unit information.  I know.....this is not a HB map but the mappers need to be aware of how our units operate and give us the room. Especially if the user wants to have two maps in the slots.
It would be nice if the folks could talk to each other before deciding on their own information and design..

I received my RAM mount yesterday, I will begin the installation next week (after Memorial day)...

So now I was thinking, what PC software freeware (or purchasable) will help me in looking over the maps and help to add routes or waypoints I want to look at while off the water?

Thanks!

Mike A!
