Title: Upgrading. Need advice on best shallow water unit.
Post by: Juicegoose on June 05, 2017, 09:36:24 AM
I fish down in LA. Lake Calcasieu to be exact so typically I'm running and fishing in 4-8 feet of water. Occasionally i will work along a ship channel that is deep40-60 feet but other then that i'm in the shallow stuff. Currently i have an old Garmin 498 and other then make lines on the gps screen it's pretty much useless. Charts are outdated and sonar just gives me rough approximation of depth. I have been reading all i can and I was thinking about upgrading to the Helix 10 si mega. Would it be overkill for what my fishing habitat is? updated charting and better sonar are what I'm after but i realize downimaging and traditional 2d sonar are gunna limit my view tremendously at my depths.

Are there other options I should be looking at?

I have a mega 10 with 360. I fish in a few lakes(all electric) one is 10 ft deep . You will be able to see at least 50 ft to each side with si . In water 3 ft deep . This is where humminbird shines. I've had an hds 8 . Big improvement. I got the larger screen for the 360 . Only draw back big power eater 2.7 amps for the 10 and.5 for the 360. The only other downfall is I cant RANXIUblame my electronics for not finding fish
