Title: Does your (XHS 9 HDSI 180 T) Helix Gen 1 transducer work at planing speed?
Post by: mako9man2 on May 16, 2017, 07:07:42 PM: Looking to the Forum Brain Trust for some feedback. On my last boat I could never get the Helix XHS 9 HDSI 180 T transducer to read depth when on plane so I had to add the 2nd 2D sonar skimmer transducer and Y cable to compensate. On my new boat I am trying again to get the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T to read depth accurately at high speed. The new boat has a much smoother hull bottom and so far I have gotten very promising results with crystal clear SI/DI readings up to 8mph before having to get the boat up to speed and get on plane. Even on plane I have gotten great readings up to about 32 mph. After 32mph the depth readings get erratic.

1. What is the highest speed (greater than 32 mph) that you have gotten your XHS 9 HDSI 180 T to consistently read depth?

2. Is there any danger of destroying this expensive transducer by consistently operating it at higher speeds say >45mph?

It reads depth at WOT 39mph ... There's lots of aeration Clutter in the 2d image but the depth is consistent ...

Have someone drive the boat and peek over the transom at high speed ... "Clean" water coming out from under the transom will be the same color as the lake water - white colored water is aerated and not a conducive spot to mount an xducer for high speed ..

I don't care about the quality of the picture at speed just that it read depth consistently. If I can get it to do that I can avoid the extra expense/work involved in adding the 2nd transducer.

Be really careful when peeking over the transom at high speed looking for the area of "Clean water" coming out from under the hull ...

We wouldn't want you (or anyone) going over the transom ...

Post by: mako9man2 on May 22, 2017, 08:10:06 PM: I have continued to work with my transducer and can now read depth up to at least 40mph. It does better when there is not a lot of heavy chop.
