All,
I just purchased the helix 12 mega chirp SI. I do a lot of night fishing. My old 997 NVB had a feature that you changed the background to blue or black via the power button menu, it changed both the map background and the sonar background colors dark for better viewing at night. My new helix 12 mega chirp does neither. It does not change the background on the 2d sonar image at all nor does it change the background colors for the humminbird ChartSelect map. When I deselect the ChartSelect to the standard base map I see that it does change that background but it is useless as there is no depth contours on the base map for my lakes. Is this a bug or do I now have to go through all the other menu options to change both the sonar colors to a dark background and then adjust the map colors manually to darker shades at night only to have to reverse all the options in the morning. If so, this is a real disappointment. What is the purpose of the background color option on the menu if it only changes the base map?

That setting only affects the mapping.

If you want black Sonar backgrounds, just choose the color palette you prefer - as most all of them have a black background with the same colors.
More user customization.... :D

I know that I can manually change the sonar background by itself. That is not the question. As I stated, my 997 would change BOTH the background of the map AND the sonar at the same time when I changed the background to black using the power button menu. I did not have to change one then change the other. Is this feature no longer available? It would be a shame if it did....

Most of us here are quite aware of the features of a unit around 8-10 years old.
I answered your question, evidently you just didn't like the answer the way it was worded.
More user customization was requested by users more than users that wanted the same old features.
The xx7, xx8 and xx9 series Core units had the background like you are used to - the Helix series has changed as I outlined.
I like the change and run my sonar palettes with a black background day and night , and it appears you do not.
