Title: Newbie-where to start?
Post by: Steve-NH on August 31, 2016, 12:44:02 PM
Name is Steve.  I boat and fish mainly Saltwater in the northeast.  I recently purchased a 2006 2301 CC with some awesome electronics. My last boat had a Lowrance setup with fish finder and gps. This new boat has a single 1198c Si, plus two identical 998c Si units plus radar and gps. Transducer is the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T – Transom mount. 20/60/180°, 200/83/455/800kHz.  Everything is networked together and seems to function.  I am overwhelmed with the setup options available in these units and looking for a good place to start.  What frequency's do I select, for Side scan vs standard?  Can I do both?  Little overwhelmed.

My wish list is the following:

1. Good working Fish finding in both Side imaging and standard 2D fish finding at trolling speeds.
2. high speed accurate depth readings.
3. A good mix of each between the units.
4. Radar and Charts  - I think I have this covered and functioning as required.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome to the Humminbird world Steve.  A good place to start is do a search on You Tube for humminbird videos for your model equipment.  There are tons of them available.  This sight is also a great resource of information.  A couple of google searches will bring up other sights with applicable information to help you get started. The 1198 is a great piece of equipment to use when starting out.  The large screen makes it easy to spot fish and locate drop offs using the side imaging. Have fun with your new purchase.

Thanks for the info I will be sure to check out some you tube vids.
I guess I guess one question I have for you is this.
Does the transducer switch frequencies when switching from SI to traditional sonar or doe they use the same kHz band?

That I am not sure about it.  I would think that it should be in the manual.   This reminds me to say you should go to the Humminbird.com web site and register your units in your name. you need to start an account so that you will have access to any upgrades in software when it comes available.   Register each unit and the day you received them.

With the 1198, you have the choice of using the 455 or 800 Khz for SI  and the 2D will be either 200Khz or 200/83 Khz.  The 200Khz 2D is used for depth info and will be pinging even when you are full screen SI.
The frequencies you select for each one will remain that way til you change it again....Changing views has no affect on the settings....always power off with the power button.... not by disconnecting power externally.

Doug Vahrenberg has a wealth of video's spanning several years.  Go to some of the earlier videos.  He has videos for pretty much everything you will want to know as a new user.  https://www.youtube.com/user/imonbass (https://www.youtube.com/user/imonbass)

Jason Halfen's website also has a lot of good info.

It's a good idea to set up a power supply in your house and learn the basic operation to make you more efficient on the water.
There is a forced simulator mode that will save your settings

You can go here to download an 1198 op manual.  http://www.humminbird.com/Category/Support/Product-Manuals/ (http://www.humminbird.com/Category/Support/Product-Manuals/)

Thanks Bob I will be checking out his videos tonight.  Being that 99% of the fishing I do will be in 250ft of water or less I guess it makes sense to select the higher frequencies.  1 issue I was having was in the selection of the transducer...I would arrow to the correct transducer and the unit would send me back to the main menu.  Could this be a bug or something I was doing wrong?  Should I DL the latest software for each unit ?

It is normal for the screen to change automatically when selecting a "Connected Transducer" menu option ...

HB feels that if you change the "Connected Transducer" selection = you knew exactly what you were doing and why you changed it ... So the unit redirects you out of that menu before you change it to something else ...

As to your other question ...

It's always a good idea to download every release HB puts into your HB account ...whether you actually use it or not ...

It's better to have it and never use it ...than it is to need it and don't have access to it ...

::)  weird re: the ducer selection assumption.  Good to know.  Thought it was a glitch.  You would think the system should know what transducer is plugged into it in this day and age.
Thanks Rickie

Thanks Rickie

Some units/xducers do have an XID wire channel to the xducer for the unit to automatically detect and set certain parameters for that specific xducer ... (ONIX being one of those with XID) ...

None of the core series units have this XID wire channel to the xducer ...

The "Connected Transducer" "Menu" is basically you telling the unit what frequencies to transmit down thru the wire channels - regardless of which xducer you have physically connected to the unit ...

XID creates added cost to manufacture into the xducers ...and into the units ...
