I seem to be having a problem with my 998 that I don't believe was there before I updated the firmware from 7.51(???) to 7.67 this year.
On the attached picture, you will see a thick line at around 2 feet. The deeper the water I'm in the narrower the line is. Also, I don't seem be marking anything suspended, just the bottom and the colors don't look correct to me. I'm am using a "Y" cable with the side imaging transducer and a thru-hull high speed transducer.
Any idea what might be causing this or is there a setting I'm not remembering to set, since the firmware update requires a "reset to defaults"?

Hit the MENU key twice... Scroll over to SONAR... Scroll down to SURFACE CLUTTER... Adjust accordingly. Also check to see if JIGGING MODE is selected in the XPRESS MENU (Hitting the MENU KEY just once).

I have tried changing the surface clutter setting. It's set to the lowest setting. Setting it higher makes it worse. I'll check the jigging mode, but I don't believe that is enabled.

Also check to see if your Switchfire (under the sonar tab) is on Clear or Max. On Max you will get more noise near the surface. Turning the surface clutter down will fade out fish signals suspended near the surface. It could also be caused by the 83 kHz either being turned on when it wasn't before, or the 83 kHz sensitivity is turned up.

I've tried both Clear and Max with the SwitchFire setting. I've also tried all the combinations of the 83K/200K setting and checked the 83K sensitivity to no avail.

This anomoly at the top of the 2d display can sometimes be caused by an air bubble between the bilge mounted xducer and the fiberglass ...
Unplug the AS SIDB Y cable and plug the HDSI directly into the unit to determine if the bilge mounted xducer may be causing the anomoly ...
If the line is only present when the AS SIDB Y cable and bilge mounted xducer is connected ... you may want to remove and re-install the bilge mounted xducer ...
