Have just upgraded to an 1198c SI unit for the helm. As a precautionary move I am thinking of adding a second transducer to use exclusively for high speed so I can mount the SI transducer slightly above the hull line on the transom. Any experiences/suggestion/recommendations would be welcome. Is there a specific transducer that you would suggest ?

If your boat is single layer glass..you can use the XP 9 20 or the XP 9 20 T as a "shoot thru" Dual Beam" 2d...(the XP 9 20 T comes with epoxy)..
You would also need the AS SIDB Y cable ...which disconnects the wires going to the 2d element of the HDSI xducer and instead connects the wires going to the XP 9 20...
If your boat is metal...you can use the XNT 9 20 (transom mount Dual Beam 2d)...
Lots of fiberglass owners use this setup to protect the more expensive HDSI xducer from damage...and it's easier to get proper 2d xducer placement for high speed depth readings...

If I go the two transducer route both of mine will have to be transom mounted. In that case how far apart can/do they need to be? Does the SI transducer need to be lower than the DB or will it matter?

The XNT 9 20 (in your case of aluminum boat)...is the stock Dual Beam xducer listed under the 2d sonar unit applications....
It is not listed in the xducer list because the XNT 9 20 is not the "stock" xducer for the SI units...
The Dual Beam xducers are used in these scenarios as a "work-around" for boat applications that are difficult to get high speed readings from the stock SI unit XHS 9 HDSI 180 T xducer...

Distance between the two xducers is not an issue because the AS SIDB Y cable "disconnects" the wire channel going to the 2d piezo in the HDSI xducer...therefore there is no way for the 2d piezo in the HDSI xducer to ping at the same time as the 2d piezo in the XNT 9 20...
Also the 2d piezo operates at different frequencies from the SI piezoes in the HDSI ...so cross talk is not an issue...
The XNT 9 20 should be mounted higher than the HDSI xducer in order to not block any of the SI beam that emits from the side of the HDSI xducer...(it would even be better if the XNT 9 20 could be mounted in front or behind the HDSI xducer...such that the SI beams could can pass by the XNT 9 20)...
If your boat has a flat transom with no steps...you may have to put a spacer block between the HDSI xducer bracket and the transom to get the SI beams to pass behind the XNT 9 20 housing...

I use 3 transducers on muy boat 2 SI transducer for each side and a TM258 for 2D not problème for speed (limite at 35nd for my boat) cone angle at 5° to make maps with RM. Great work!
