Title: Anti-Glare shield on the cheap
Post by: freezerfiller on September 25, 2013, 04:40:58 PM
I got fed up with the glare.  Even when I would shield it from above, my white boat reflects glare from below and all sides.  What I needed was a way to shield it from all sides.  So I introduce to you, my "redneck raptorcap"

I would make sure it can't overheat.

Good point, I'll keep an eye on it.  I thought about that, and I ran it indoors for an hour, with no issues. The back of the unit is open as before, the only contact point is the rear lip.  Another good thing about this is the screw in knobs hold it in place, so no velcro required.   I tested some paints last night to see if any stick.  I plan to paint it White on the outside so it will be salt water approved, and stay cooler in the sun.

Nice!

Might have to look into making one for next season.

There is a paint made for recovering auto dashboards. You might want to look at it. It may stick to plastic better than the average spray can of paint.

Yeah, I checked a few plastic paints, and Krylon fusion won the "doesn't scratch off" contest.  Here are some pics of it installed.  I took it out yesterday, and I must say it was a dramatic improvement on the glare, and the buttons were easy to use.  The only downside was now my wife could see it too, so I got bombarded with questions like  "are those fish?,  what does that color on the bottom mean?,  if those are fish, why aren't we catching them?"  etc. :)

Might I suggest trying a concussion lure?  >:D
