Title: Need help with 997, grainy images
Post by: cbgeorge on September 16, 2009, 09:37:30 PM
I am trying to get best out my unit, but my images are not as clear as seen on other sites people have took, posted. I am using sensitivity to auto, if i set it manual , and 8-12, or higher, it is very sandy looking. I set the contrast on a lower number 2 , 3 or 4 and  the sharp to off, seems if I raise the contrast or sharp, it really becomes grainy. I also use the 455 freq, seems the 800  is very dark on the outer 1/2 of the shots, like set for 100 ft, the last 50 is just dark blue. I try to keep my boat speed to 2-4, seems line 2.8 is best i get. any help would be very appreciated, I also attach a couple photos to give you a idea of what i get. all these are on 455

George,

These images look pretty good to me!

As for the 800khz, what is your depth and what is the SI range set to when you see the dark 1/2.  Remember, the 800khz has a smaller beam angle and therefore does not see out as far (depending on the depth) as the 455khz.  Basically, with 800khz, your range should be no more 2.5-3 times your depth.  So if you are 20' deep, the SI range should be no more than 60'.

Hope this helps.  You may find that some settings will need tweaking depending on conditions.  Sediments and marine life can also affect image quality as well.  During the summer, marine life in the slat water is very abundant and creates a grainy affect on my images as well.

Overall, the images you posted for 455khz look pretty good.

Good Luck,

Robert

Pictures look really good to me too. If it's any help, I've discovered that the best way for me to juggle the settings is to record my trips and then review it on the 997 on my return. You can adjust all the settings on playback and fiddle with them until you get the best picture, getting screenshots and marking waypoints as if you were running on the water in real time.

Charlie,

I say you go to the media and show them what you found.

Is this a remote area that people just don't go to often?  Seems like you cold find a diver.  I am going to check scuba board and see if there are any divers in the area.

Here is a link to the post I put on ScubaBoard. (http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/underwater-treasures/305406-need-diver-near-pittsburgh-blanchard-pa-solve-mystery.html)  I also linked back to this post.

Charlie,

I didn't realize how close to Pittsburgh you are!  My family is from Pittsburgh!  Are you a Steeler Fan?

I am going to make a few phone calls and see who I can find to dive.

Charlie,

I think I found a diver who is interested in checking out the site.  He wants to know a little more about it.  Location, visibility, current, etc.

There are several guys who are interested in helping out!

Good Luck and keep us informed!

My settings on 997c SI are TVG is on SI Enhance is 12,10, low sharpness. 2.8 mph speed sometimes it is just hard to know what some peices of structure are especially if they are man made. I try to zoom to 2x some of the time for a clearer picture.

I have found the same problem. Robert suggested to me to lower my distance. Rule of thumb is distance of side scan be only 3 times the  depth you are scanning. The ducer only see's 105 degrees i'm told. When i tried that and kept my speed between 3 to 4mph with the boat on a steady course things became very clear. Hope this helps
