Title: Transducer for trolling motor mounting
Post by: tennwalkinghorse on April 03, 2010, 04:53:29 PM
I have a question about the transducer - if someone could please answer it for me.  I am planning to buy a 898c SI unit in the very near future.  Here is my question:  It is my understanding that if you opt to mount the transducer on the trolling motor in lieu of the transom you can send the transducer for the transom back to Hummingbird and they will replace it with a trolling motor style transducer.  Is this correct?  Is the transducer that Hummingbird sends back to you a totally different style of transducer designed specifically for trolling motors or is it just the same transom type transducer with a trolling motor mounting bracket kit?  I'd appreciate it if someone who has dealt with this type of conversion would please answer this for me.  Thanks

I moved my transom mount transducer to the trolling motor this spring.  I purchased the trolling motor mount kit from humminbird for about 35.00.  It is my understanding that humminbird does mot make a trolling motor specific transducer, just a mounting kit for the stock SI transom transducer.  Be careful the transducer is large and very prone to damage due to the awkward positioning on the trolling motor.  It is a huge weed catcher also.  I may be installing it back on the transom soon.

Good luck

Transducer Shield and Saver has a mount that is better for protecting the HDSI transducer.
Humminbird also has a trolling motor specific SI transducer, but it only has 83/200/455 khz frequencies. I use it for my 798ci SI

Earlier this year, I talked to Customer Service about this same thing.  I was told that the transducer was the same.

By trading it in, you get the TM mounting kit basically without paying for it except for shipping.  You can also just pay the $35 + shipping and get the kit and keep your transom mounting hardware.

I opted for the more expensive Transducer Shield and Saver as I was leaving soon for a fishing trip and they could get it to me in a day.  I ordered on a Wednesday, installed on Thursday, tried it out on Thursday and left for my trip on Friday.

No real need for me to jump in here Chuck as they’ve given good advice.  Just to sum up though:

1.) You can purchase the AD-STM-7 Trolling Motor Adapter Bracket and use it with the transom mount HDSi that came with your 898 unit.

2.) You can call the Humminbird Customer resource folks at 1-800-633-1468 and set up to trade the standard transom mount HDSi transducer that came with your 898 unit (XHS-9-HDSi-180-T) for either the trolling motor mount version (which is just the same transducer plus the AD-STM-7 adapter) or the XTM-9-Si-180-T Trolling Motor Side Imaging Transducer.  This transducer was designed to mount on the trolling motor and fits a little more snugly but you will not have the 800kHz Si frequency when using this transducer.

3.) You can use the standard transom mount transducer that came with your 898 unit and adapt it to the trolling motor using one of the aftermarket adapters offered by a few different companies out there like “Transducer Shield & Saver” or “Transducer Armor”:

http://www.transducerarmor.com/store/store_product_detail.cfm?Product_ID=1 (http://www.transducerarmor.com/store/store_product_detail.cfm?Product_ID=1)

4.) You can make your own trolling motor adapter.

Personally I like the TMSI-997/1197 bracket that Scap at Transducer Shield & Saver makes.  Rugged, good fitting to the trolling motor and looks like it will protect that $275 HDSi transducer.
